Installation of the new Avast version 5.0.393!!
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:44:52 AM »
Dear Forum,

What is the recommended procedure to install the new Avast version 5.0.393?

Straight over Avast 5.0.373?

Do we have to do this in safe mode?

Or is it better to uninstall 5.0.373, use the avast uninstall tool and then complete a fresh install of 5.0.393?

Are we still fully protected if we use our computers with Avast 5.0.393?

Cheers,

Done.

Install went flawlessly and system rebooted ok.

BUT, the big question is whether the random system freezes have been fixed.

Watch this space! :D

Just tested the new release on my netbook, now it won't boot up - completely locks up at every attempt with the welcome to Avast balloon on the screen, pointer and hourglass frozen on screen!  Disaster! What to do?

So - uninstalled Avast in safe mode, rebooted and trying to reinstall and it pc locked up again on the installation progress - finishing setup screen. This is getting rediculous!

i have no problems with first release on my xp-sp3,but what i'd recommend you is to make a hard drive image after uninstalling 50377,just in case.

Hope you have any restore points depending what system you are using. Run sysyem restore in safe mode and try and get your computer working? before you installed the new avast. If you still cannot boot up then you are out of luck! a repair of windows is needed.

5.0.393 installed quick and easy with no issues.  (Vista Home)   Oddly I had the same issue those with XP SP3 had been having (constant BSODs) but on my Vista machine.    The machines with XP Home and XP Pro havent had a problem with it.     I put 4.8 back on the Vista machine yesterday.    This morning (after some very strong coffee) I decided to give it another go.    Used the uninstall util via safe mode then rebooted and installed 5.0 and this time without the Behaviour Shield.   Have had no further BSODs or any other issues since this morning.    Figured ild be a guinea pig and put 5.0393 on (with Behaviour Shield this time) and see how it goes.   No problems and Ive been pushing the system like crasy to see if anything will go wrong.

I've not installed it on my XP SP3 system yet, only because I haven't had a problem with 5.0 on it since installing it when it was first released the other day.   Another cup o' coffee and I'll probably take care of that one too.

OK up and running again (XP SP3) after uninstalling again in safe mode using removal tool. Back to version 377 and not gonna risk trying to install the update. Have one issue, Windows Security Alert reports Avast out of date. In Avast update screen shows current version 100119-0, says latest definition os 100126-1 and last apdate attempt 8 mins ago - I dont seem to be able to update, clicking the update engine and virus definitions button it says already up to date current version 100126-1 but clicking on OK goes back to previous screen wher it says out of date. Any suggestions>

Just press 'Stop' on its real-time shield page in the GUI. I get no more blue screens and streaming videos is smoother.
