This morning (after some very strong coffee) I decided to give it another go.
Quote
I've not installed it on my XP SP3 system yet, only because I haven't had a problem with 5.0 on it since installing it when it was first released the other day.   Another cup o' coffee and I'll probably take care of that one too.
So this is where everyone is doing it wrong, they forget the coffee........ ;D i am a strong beliver in coffee....or beer.. 8)

same here with coffee and beer, red wine... see, Avast 5 is running like a charm on my system  8)

Dear people from Alwil Team, are you familiar with one huge bug that is causing system unbootable after installation of new Avast?

Few of my friends and also some people on Serbian Forums are complaining that after installation of Avast and rebooting system, OS become non-stable and, in most cases, unbootable... The only solution is deinstaling Avast from safe mode...

I am telling you this because this is my favorite AV and was favorite to most of my friends, until they didn't install new version  ::) and I'm little sad because they quit using Avast! and sadly now they don't recommend it to other people.  :-\

I installed it over Avast! 5 377 on one of our XP machines and all seems to be O.K.  Since the other computer is being used by someone else at the moment, I'd install it later.

I have given up on my Acer netbook running XP SP3, wasted an entire morning trying to get version 5 running on it and have now gone back to 4.8 which is fine. Too many issues with this, Avast getting a bad name here, such a shame as I've sung their praises for years, at this moment in time would have to recommend avoidance.

Installed 393 Pro over 377 Pro on Vista x32.  No problems before, no new problems now.

Update

Just experienced the first random system freeze with version 5.0.393. This means the problems haven't been completely rectified yet.

The freeze occurred whilst being away from the computer for half-an-hour. MBAM resident, Firefox and PCTFW were the only programs loaded. Memory usage was 380 from 2,440 (lower than under 4.8.1368!)

I hope this helps Alwil to rectify the random freeze problem with Avast 5 on Window$ XP Pro $P3 systems.

Avastfan1, you mean like a complete freeze, or just programs becoming flaky? If complete freeze, could you at least move the mouse cursor?

Hi Vlk,

It indeed warms my heart to received a personal response from Alwil! Thank you!

The mouse cursor can still be moved, however everything else is frozen. The Task Manager cannot be activated (with control, alt and delete) and nothing else responds. Not even the Start Menu.

Hope this helps and I look forward to your response!

Best wishes,

OK, now it's my turn to have trouble...  :(

I've run Avast Pro 4.x for many years with no problems at all.
Updated to 5.0.377 when it was released. No problems... Just installed over 4.8

Tried to install the new version 393 and then the problems started.
PC froze on startup - Avast icon spins two times and then PC freezes, even the mouse goes dead..

Uninstalled in safe mode and tried a new fresh install - same problems...

Reboot in safe mode and unticked the Behaviour Shield in Add/Remove programs.
PC starts just fine...

Tried one more time to activate the Behaviour Shield, and PC freezes after reboot.
Disabled the Behaviour Shield one more time, and everything is back to normal.

...so as a summary: With 377 everything runs just fine - Behaviour Shield included.
...with 393 I can't get my computer to run with Behaviour Shield.
