Mail Shield problem.

Hello!

I have a problem with the avast 5.0.377 Mail Shield.
Namely: does not cooperate with the Opera 10 mail client (gmail, IMAP).
Does not check incoming mail, outgoing mail only at the "Last email scanned".
Avast automatically recognize the IMAP, SMTP gmail account.
I turned off the encryption in Opera, but no effect.

What's wrong?

Thanks, this makes it easier :)

Now, that looks to be correct, so avast! is right :)

What you need to do is:

Open Opera --> Tools --> Mail and Chat Accounts --> edit the IMAP google one --> set the settings like I have set in the image.

I can confirm that this works and it can be seen in the second image.

Let me know how it goes...

your settings in Avast are correct. The issue must lie in Opera mail configuration...

just gave it a shot in Opera with Gmail/IMAP, works like a charm here, both incoming and outgoing mails scanned by Avast   ??? ;D

The problem was solved!  IMAP Port number changed from 993 to 143 in Opera.

But I don't understand why not working with 993.   ???
There are 993 in the Troubleshooting, redirect settings, IMAP port(s).

I'm not sure why 993 doesn't work. It doesn't seem to work for me either, just says 'connecting' for ever...but at least 143 works 8)

Now, back to thunderbird for me ;D

OK people, once again  ;D 993 is the normal IMAP/ssl port for Gmail. But since you want to get your mails scanned by Avast, it can't work with 993 because it's an ssl port >>> connection is encrypted. So the trick is to use 143/587 (or 25) instead, so that the mail client will receive/send mails from/to local host (127.0.0.1) in an unencrypted way. It's during this phase that Avast can scan, because the avast proxy is also connected to local host. On the other end of the proxy, Avast will be connected to the mail server (Gmail in this case) to/from 465(or 587)for SMTP and 993 for IMAP or 995 for POP.

 Now depending on configurations, using 993 (without mail scanned) when the email scanner is on can block the connection completely. Sometime the proxy just lets go and you just get the pop up from avast, sometimes it blocks everything.

I thought that, and that is what you would expect right? But out of curiosity, I tried in TB and I get emails scanned if I manually set 993 in and add it to redirect...


Regardless, you are right, best to leave it at default settings (143/587), and let avast take care of it :)

yeah it can work if you indeed add it to "redirect", as the port set in Thunderbird is just a "virtual" internal port, can be changed to a few others. I use to use 10993 with Avast4 and Stunnel. But I would avoid 993, could lead to conflicts, and I'm surprised it works actually. You incoming mails are scanned right ?

Yep, saw the scanned tag at the bottom :)

But I went back to 143, the default setting, as that works for me, no point fixing it if it aint broken :)
