Updated just fine (from within the program) from 377 to 396, no problems (so far).

I don't remember seeing an update-available popup for this one.  I first learned of it via what seems to be a new feature I never noticed before (maybe added in one of the most recent engine/defs updates?), a "new version available" notice on the status screen.  That's a handy and (I think) unpublicized addition, thanks.

If you mean you are running the beta and you want to know if you can do the upgrade to the released version, I would think so. Give it a shot.

I think the official release is the same as the .396 beta,  I updated to the official release from .377 on one computer; the other has the .396 beta and the updater says I have the latest version.  Standard practice is to change the version number if you have some differences.

Still getting random freezes with 5.0.396.

They really need to sort this! :(

In your sig it says "MBAM 1.44 (resident protection module enabled)".

That's a known oft-reported conflict and I'm sure Vlk and co are working on it.

The old maxim of never running two resident antimalware programs at the same time has a lot of merit :)

Vista Home Basic, updated from .377 to .396 using program interface, all went smoothly. Proxy Settings now stay put when changed, but if I set Update Parameters to "I only connect to the internet using a dial up modem" it still won't auto update. But when turned off it updates just fine, so nothing crucial.

Thanks Alwil! :)

Hi PhilR,

Thanks for the reply. Avast and MBAM have played nicely together for a long time now. There should be no reason for a change in that with the new version.

I agree that Vlk and the lads will sort it. Godspeed to them!

Should is right, but for now, if you don't want to deal with freezes deselect "Start with Windows" in your MBAM. Delaying MBAM's start works for a while but freezes will eventually re-appear.  :P

Ditto.  Win7 HomePrem 64bit here and Comodo FW D+ enabled.  I, too saw an update was available on the GUI and let it do the update.  But program update to 5.0.396 completed without a glitch and AV5 is running like a kitten purring.  Did a Quick Scan and Full Scan to test her and absolutely no probs.  But then I didn't really have any probs with my original Avast 5 Free clean install in safe mode.

@ Cazozo.......you said "I have no firewall, no other av or security software, but MSE and deactivated."

I used MSE for a few months and don't recall ever seeing a place inside the GUI for "deactivating".  So I totally uninstalled that software via Add/Remove in Control Panel.  Maybe there is some little piece of MSE still in the registry or at least still "visible" to the Avast installer/updater that is blocking a clean install/update of Avast5.  Why don't you try totally uninstalling MSE from your system and reinstall to see if that resolves any of your issues?  Worth a try. After uninstalling MSE, uninstall your Avast 5, Run the aswClear.exe for Avast5 (in safe mode), reboot and then do a clean install of Avast5.  MSE just might be a factor in your situation.
