Whilst the web site says you don't need ot (and that worked for me), you would have to be blind not to see that some people are having problems doing it this way (not everyone) and for most they are also running Windows XP.
So if you are using XP it might be advisable to do a clean install, you may feel even if you don't have XP you might want to do a clean install, so here it is:
Download the latest avast 5.0 version and save it to your hard disk, some where you can find it later.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility,
find it here and save it to your HDD.
- 1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
