I am encountering the same problem. I am running Avast Internet Security and have just upgraded to version 5.0.396. I tried doing a network update check and received the following message: The package is broken

I then downloaded the virus data base installer (from Avast site) and encountered the same error that samlonewolf did.

@ samlonewolf
Try a manual Program update (now 5.0.396) from the avast UI (user interface) as that also updates the virus signatures.

@ freeforever03
There should be no need to do that avast 5.0 has Auto updates for the virus engine and signatures and does an incremental update (much smaller).

Then change your firewall settings to allow AvastSvc.exe and avast.setup (this is the one that does the actual update).

Thanks DavidR. I understand that Avast updates automatically, however, it has always allowed me to run a manual check (without error). Is their a problem with the server or is the problem with 5.0.396?

Well you said you encountered the same problem as samlonewolf, but that appears not to be the case as samlonewolf has succeded in downloading the off-line VPS Update file and gets this error when trying to install it.

You on the other hand appear to be having a problem with the on-line update, when using the avast UI ?

Whilst there will be a lot of server activity with the new updates - If there was a problem with the servers, then presumably samlonewolf wouldn't have been able to download the complete VPS Update file.

So I'm not clear what exactly your problem is.

My update setting for Engine and Virus Definitions won't work. I've been on the net for over 2 hours and my setting is set to update every 30 minutes. Have to update this manually to keep updated on virus def's.

Why didn't it work, what errors are displayed ?

What version are you using, Free or Pro, if free then you can change the update check duration but the default is 4 hours so 30 minutes would be ignored.

Read my reply #4 of this topic about firewall blocking.

Hi DavidR. You are correct in saying that version 5.0.396 would not update. However, I downloaded the latest virus data base and when I tried to install it, I got the same error that samlonewolf had.

What I have done was to restore a previous system image which contained Avast version 5.0.377. After the system was restored, Avast alerted me that a program update was available (5.0.396). Avast updated itself properly and now everything is updating properly.

Perhaps the problem started when I updated version 5.0.377 using the installer posted by Vlk.

Hello.

I do not have a internet connection that I can access continually. How does one download the update file like the old AVAST 4.8?

It may be best to do a clean reinstall.

Download the latest version of avast 5.0.396 and save it to your Hard Disk.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
  • 1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.
