Avast Free updating error ... and solutions?

I have Avast Free Antivirus on my computer. I started having trouble a couple days ago. When I tried to "Update engine and virus definitions" I got a message that said  "Error: Cannot connect to server." Every time I tried to update since I've received the same message. Is this due to the programs latest update, and does anybody know how to resolve this problem?
I also tried to uninstall the program, but that wouldn't work either.

My current version is 5.0.396 (I get the same error message if I try to update the program.)

I should also note that I'm using Windows Vista.

yup, i got that error when updating.. my guess is update server overload
