Please, post more information.
Which is your operational system?
What is 750: number of scanned files or, on contrary, Mb or scanned files?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?
How much free space do you have in your disk?

I am running windows xp home edition.  I have 16.2GB free. It froze at at tested files 715.  I have kerio firewall and process guard.  I seem to be getting a lot of trojans and worms lately.  That is why I was doing a thorough scan.

Did you also check the "Scanning of archives"?
Would it be possible to identify the file that causes the problem? You can turn on the creation of the Report file in program settings and check the end of the file after the freeze.

(Do you use the latest build of avast!, btw?)

Sorry for the trouble but it seems to have righted itself and worked perfectly.  Thanks anyway
