Missing components in .396
« on: January 31, 2010, 05:46:40 AM »
OK.  Thanks to Derelict_AZ I downloaded .396 from MajorGeeks -- why doesn't CNET have it?  ???  ??? -- and installed it.  It is slightly different from .377: I got a new wail of despair:
Quote
Driver Entry Point Not Found

The \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\aswMon2.sys device driver could not locate the entry point IoGetLowerDeviceObject in driver ntoskrnl.exe

This comes immediately before the complaint that I don't have MSV*90.dll etc, which .377 was unhappy about.

I am using W2K Pro SP4 rollup 1, allegedy something Avast can tolerate.  It is obvious that I don't have some software (and I see no reason to install something I don't need) with components needed by Avast!5.  So why does v5 NOT have all the necessary components?

I have several apps which don't include all components in the download.  I am very happy with them.  I am happy because on the websites, not only do they tell me what version they are at, they also have little messages: "If this message appears, you are using this OS and you need to install this component available here on our site for your convenience."

This sort of thing is exactly the reason I almost NEVER update an app untill the version I'm using is totally unuseable, and in those cases I almost always go to another brand, eg: Adobe got replaced with Foxit.

Alwil, this is ludicrous.  You claim a smaller footprint, yet the download is significantly larger, and is missing the bits it needs to make it go.  Would you expect me to buy a car with no fuel tank?  That's how I feel about your current offerings.

the problem is NOT Avast. If you have a missing component of Windows OS then is not Avast fault. Search first before blame

@ calcu007 - actually, MSv*90.dll was never a component of W2K Pro.  The versions being looked for are from Visual Studio 2008...  About 10us after W2K Pro was released  8)  It is reasonable to assume the problem with ntoskrnl.exe has the same cause.

Do you have Visual Studio in the past? Anyway that DLL is not a "missing component" in Avast

OK, I'll bite.

The following files are apparently needed by Avast 5: -
mfc90u.dll, msvcp90.dll, msvcr90.dll

These are missing from my Windows XP Pro SP3 systems.  Are they really needed and if so why wasn't the necessary runtime support made available by Avast?

If these files are not "missing components" in Avast, why does Avast!5 cry when they're not present?

I think running the product on an older PC to an extent, is just luck.
For example, running 4.8 on my 1999 AMD k6 3+ @ 550 MHz in Win2k, is *just* usable .

I find myself disabling the standard shield from time to time because of serious dragging,
and just leaving the network and web shields active.
This PC really doesn't have enough horse power to run flash animations in web pages.
