Win 7 Avast 5.0.396 large hosts file causing problems

Hello,
I have windows 7 ultimate and avast 5.0.396.
I have not had this problem with xp sp3 or vista ultimate, all 3 systems are 32bit
With win 7 when i use hostman or manually insert a large hosts file avast tells me that the mail and web shields are turned off.
Trying all means to start them fails but when i move back to the original hosts file its all working properly.
I have only just got Win 7 installed when i went to the avast homepage and found out that avast 5 was finally out, i have no idea if ths happens with avast 4.8.
I have the latest programme and definitions
Also i am using the free version

Any ideas?

i hate to see a thread with no replies, so here goes..

no i dont have the same issue. im also using avast 5 free with hostsman. i found that i had fewer problems by 127.0.0.1 to 0.0.0.0

in the hosts file and disabling the dns service. did you do that? also, from personal observation in the topics here at this forum, many problems seem to be tied to the behavior shield for whatever reason. you might also try uninstalling that if nothing else works. sorry if this is no help at all

Yer the dns service is disabled. Ill try changing it from 127.0.01 to 0.0.0.0 but if that doesnt work im going back to 4.8 as if just found out avast 5 on my xp computer isnt even attempting to auto update no matter what settings i try but thanks for you suggestions
