downgrading from 5.0 to 4.8
« on: February 02, 2010, 02:25:41 AM »
Hello all, well running xp sp3 here, along with avast5.0 version 5.0.396, and you guessed it; it still freezes after a bit of time and you have to do a hard restart.  Also running malwarebytes, and zonealarm. I think about 1M ram (installed). It was running fine last night and it locked up today, and then approx six hours later after using it for about 90 mins, walked away for about 40 mins and it was locked up again.

I have tried adjusting the sensitivity from medium to low etc.; still freezes.  So the question is what do I do or how can i get 4.8 again.  I cannot find 4.8 to d/l anywhere.  A search for 4.8 takes me to the 5.0 download.

Any ideas...?

Thanks!  I will give that a look...somehow I have never been to filehippo before....

Anyone out there still think that I can get avast 5.0 to play nice with my computer?  I have read a few other threads and they state the last program upgrade was going to take care of the freezes, well for me it did not seem to work.  I really like the new 5.0 though...

Thanks for posting this topic. After reading this and having issues similar to yours, the advice and information posted here is my only solution.

Hopefully that file hippo version is a reliable one.

There is no need to go to file hippo to download 4.8
It is available on Avasts website via the Products page
Look down a lttle on this page:

Here is a great question for the experts...if I do go back to 4.8, would the library/definitions be as up to date as 5.0?  Thankfully 4.8 ran without freezing up my system...

No, it will not save the VPS, but after installing, it will update itself automatically. Or you can do it manually.

Right...! But what i meant was, is 4.8 as 'strong' as 5.0?  do they fight all of the same stuff?  Or does 4.8 hit a wall and not 'handle' certain things.

Don't get me wrong when I had 5.0 installed it was nice...I loved all of the extra features; but it locked up my pc...

Yeah, it fights the same stuff, you dont need to worry about. Just avast 5 does it faster, and has enhacements, but 4.8 will do the job.
