Avast! 5.1 Beta soon?
« on: February 06, 2010, 01:04:39 AM »
When will you start the beta test of Avast 5.1?  I ask because you said Avast 5.1 will be a complete native 64bit software.

 ;D

Certainly not before the ink is dry on avast 5.0 release.

I don't recall that it was said Avast 5.1 will be a complete native 64bit software.

me neither... they only said it will probably support bootscan on 64 bit systems...but in another post, not related to 5.1, they also said that they aimed at producing a full 64 bit avast...later...

DavidR, you wrote in a reply to my post "64 bits native soon?" in beta forum:

"Not in the initial version 5.0, but it is being developed probably 5.1.

As has been said in other topics it isn't something that will see major differences for those with x64 OS, so the priority for now is the delivery of version 5.0."

I use now Microsoft Security Essentials 64 bits, it use more momery than Avast 5 but it's native 64bits on a 64bits OS and I see the difference.

Sorry but I didn't I would have remember that as there has been much discussion about a native 64bit version and that isn't ion the radar. So there is no way I would have said that as I don't know when avast will have a native 64bit version of avast.

What is in relation to and what I sure was mentioned is that avast 5.1 may include the boot-time scan for 64bit OS, that doesn't imply a native 64bit version of avast.

Ok, thanks for you anwser.  I'll wait for a 64bits version maybe one day, yet I'll stay with Microsoft Security Essentials.

and what would be the benefits of a full 64 bit version, when compared to the current one? what's missing now exactly, just curious  ???

The only thing missing now is boot time scanner for x64bit.

Boot time scanner for x64bit may be ready in 5.1, hopefully.

It will probably be a long time before there is a pure 64bit version of avast!, avast! 6 ???

Btw, it doesn't make any sense to say that "you see the difference" between 64bit MSE and something else.
Did you compare (the same versions of) MSE in 32bit and 64bit? If not, there's nothing to see the difference about - comparing apples to oranges (like e.g. 64bit version of MSE to 32bit version of avast!) is nonsense, it says absolutely nothing about 32 or 64 bits.

he wasn't comparing MSE 64 to avast, but the behavior of the system when 64 bit security sofware is installed to how it performs when 32 bit AV is running... to what I answered there wasn't much to notice  ;D On a side note, MSE is generating, with its own processes, unexpected CPU pics  :)
