No avast! service
« on: February 07, 2010, 06:42:41 PM »
Just upgraded from 4.8 to 5, all went well BUT after a second reboot the avast! services aren't running - I've tried clicking away on FIX NOW and Start Program on the Current Status page but no luck, I've tried reloading the avast service via a task manager too but still no go - any ideas please ?

There should be 2 Avast entries in Task Manager.

AvastSvc.exe
AvastUI.exe

Does either show up?

Try a repair of Avast.  Go to Add/Remove Programs and click on Avast entry, "Change/Remove".  In the dialog, click on Repair.  It may prompt you to restart windows.  Do so and report back.  I wish you success.

I tried that - it worked, well it said it worked but it didn't. So I un-installed, re-installed : still no good, then rebooted, that worked but the scan options on the Scan Now page were missing : just the magnifying glass icons. So I closed down the AvastUI and re-launched it and there everything works - perhaps until the next reboot...?

Actually, some people have reported that it took 2 or 3 reboots before their install of Avast 5.0.377 settled down a couple of weeks ago.  Who knows why? ???

Same problem for me ! (update from Avast 4)

The Avast Service is allways stopped, and it's impossible to start it (although it is in automatic mode), neither from the avast interface nor form the windows services management.

I repaired Avast, and also uninstall/reinstalled it... but unsuccessfully :-(

Huh, seems to be running fine but in task manager I only AvastUI? I'm guessing that is a problem?

Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread but was reading and looked at mine.

kbz1960 and regis92,

Please post the version of Windows and patch levels, other security programs installed and running.

System specifications, and any other data that you think may help.

Both avast entries should be in Task Manager.  You may have to checkmark "Show processes from all users" in Task Manager in order to see them.
