« on: February 13, 2010, 04:59:15 PM »
Recently I have installed Avast 5.0.418. It make system slow...but it is working fine.
I tried to update it by using Avast UI...but it shows an error

"cannot connect to download824.avast.com(174.120.185.66:80)"

Then I downloaded the virus data base installer (from Avast site) and encountered the error like

can't install VPS update. Please report follong errorcodes:
Ver:5.0.418
SI:0x00000002
ST:0xFFFFFFFE
LE:0x00000000

There were already roughly 5 similar reports recently, and ALL of them were from India.
I wonder if that's just a coincidence...

Maybe some Indian software conflicting?

So, you mean there is no solution of this problem...
Not expected such kind of vague idea...

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

I followed all the instruction...
(1) uninstall the Avast.
(2) boot
(3) run uninstall utility in safe mode
(4) boot
(5) install Avast 5.0.418
(6) boot
(7) Register it
(8) boot

After performing these steps I tried to update the Avast by using Avast UI, but again it show the same error
"cannot connect to download733.avast.com(208.43.71.133:80)"
Now whats next !!!
(Earlier I had Avast 4.8, and I never faced such online update problem, than whats wrong with Avast 5)

The avast update problem is solved after changing the Avast update setting...This is something what we are expecting from Avast expert.
Anyway, guys, I tried some different setting in Avast UI and it works....great satisfaction after this

(1) Open Avast UI   (2) Go to "setting"  (3) goto "updates" : A window will appear
(4) goto "Update parameter" and select "my computer is permanently connected to internet "
(5) goto "proxy setting" and select "direct connection(no proxy)"
(6) "OK" all window
I work well with broadband connection.

So enjoy Avast v5 "a better security"

Hi tech,
No, i don't mean the update solution is given for the first time...
But I expect this part (suggestion) from Avast expert team.
I am using this Avast since last 3 year and it never made me down...
So, considering its loyal user, such small "avast UI setting" should have been given before hand.

Also, I want to know "why offline update failed  ???" Is there any solution of this problem.

What's the error message?
Did you try downloading the vpsupd.exe file again?

I am having this same issue as well.  I am using WinXP SP3.  I updated from 4.x to 5.0.418.  I am using Ashampoo Firewall and have set avast.setup and ashupd.exe with full access rights.  I have changed the connection settings in Avast to no proxy and permanent connection since I use a 2-wire router.  I did the suggested above and removed avast using add/remove. Rebooted.  Ran the aswclear5.exe cleaner.  Rebooted.  Verified the Alwil folder in Program Files was removed, downloaded the manual install exe file from the site and reinstalled.  Rebooted and changed the settings to no proxy and permanent connection again.  Same error.  Manual update did not install before or after the manual reinstall.  Please let me know if you need more info.

My firewall rules for 5.0 deal with avast.setup (TCP, port 80) and AvastSvc.exe (ICMP, TCP, HTTP ports). No problems with updates.

I was able to update avast by going into add/remove programs and selecting the update components option in the change/remove settings.  Curiously, this is the only way it will update.  When I do a connection test through avast, it still asks for permission to allow an outgoing connection from avast.setup on port 80 even though I already granted it full access.  Even though the connection test fails, I am still able to update.  I even turned off my firewall completely and it did not make a difference.  The only way it seems to work is through add/remove.
