I've tried to uninstall version 4.8 using the uninstall utility aswclear.exe (in SAFE mode, with self-protect disabled), but as soon as I hit the Uninstall key my system starts to reboot spontaneously ... I'm using Windows XP SP3, legal and fully updated.

Prior to that I tried using the Windows Add/Remove Programs function, but the same thing happened. I tried to install version 5 (which should automatically remove version 4.8), but it also resulted in a reboot.

Luckily version 4.8 is still intact and functioning properly after the reboot. Should I just stick to it and forget about version 5?  :-\

Thanks!

If I understand correctly, you cannot get the uninstaller, or the Avast Remover tool to function correctly?

Have you tried the add/remove progrmas method in anything besides 'Safe Mode'?

You mentioned that you tried installing Avast! 5; how far did that process get?
(ie.  you might now have two Avast products trying to run, for that I would submit a trouble ticket to the official Alwil support team:)

http://support.avast.com/

Also, are you knowledgable in your 'Services' panel?  As before, Im no Alwil tech but maybe you can verify how many Avast! instances are trying to run together.  This info may be helpful to the REAL techs in diagnosing your exact issue.

I hope someone with more knowledge than this can help you out.  Best suggestion is the trouble ticket method I would think though.

Here's a recap of my actions:
1. I tried to uninstall version 4.8 using the Windows Add/Remove tool: unsuccessful, causes reboot.
2. I tried to install version 5 (which should also remove 4.8): unsuccessful, causes reboot. Version 5 is not installed on my PC.
3. Lastly, I tried the aswclear.exe utility in SAFE mode to remove version 4.8: unsuccessful, causes reboot. Version 4.8 is still functional, but required a "Repair" action after showing an RPC error.
My question:
When even aswclear.exe does not remove version 4.8 from my system, what else can I try? A complete Windows XP reinstall?

Thanks for any suggestions!

You say you tried installing V5 and something went wrong,
have you tried running the removal tool for V5 first, reboot and then running the removal tool for 4.8 and reboot ?

When I run the uninstall utility aswclear.exe (in SAFE mode) and click the "Uninstall" button, my PC immediately starts to reboot and afterwards in Windows I get a warning message that my system has recovered from a fatal error. Version 4.8 is still intact however ... I never reach the stage where I'm asked by aswclear.exe to reboot.

Thanks for any suggestion ...

This is the new link to remove ALL versions and products of Avast: http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe

The problem is that when you have multiple versions in your machine, when you go into Safe Mode to use the Uninstaller Tool, you can only uninstall one version at a time, then need to reboot.  Then you need to go back in and do it again for a different version...at least this is my experience using XP-Home, XP-Pro, and Vista machines.

To remove all versions (4.0, 5.0, 6.0, etc.) from your machine:

1. Save a copy of Avast (the version and product you need) and save it to your HDD:
http://www.avast.com/download-software – all products – 6.0.1091
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe and save it to your HDD.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
6. Reboot.  If you have CCleaner on your machine, run it now to clean up your machine.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot
8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.

9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let us know if this fixes your problems.  Thank you.
