How can I get Avast to stop asking me to update to Avast 5?
« on: February 16, 2010, 01:08:51 AM »
Every time Avast asks me to update, the little green window at the bottom right corner of the screen pops up and then a bigger window pops up telling me about Avast 5 etc...

It's getting kind of annoying, especially because it interrupts a computer game I play. Whenever Avast's pops up, it "windows" my game and brings me back to the desktop. I can click on my game's window and bring it back up though.

How can I disable this feature/pop-up?
Thanks in advance!

I apologize for the double post. But I see that someone else has already asked this question.
So never mind then.
Thanks for reading anyway!  ;D

EDIT: Hmm, the other topic that asked this same question hasn't got a answer yet. So maybe I could "open" this question back up?

Maybe this is what they mean by the new "Silent/Gaming Mode" feature (upgrade to v5 and it won't interrupt your games anymore)!  ;D

As you noticed, I also find it extremely annoying.  Hopefully we'll both get an answer soon.

Thanks for replying!
I've heard some negative thing about Avast 5, so I don't want to update to it until it's "safer".
But I really hope we get a answer soon. I don't want to update yet.  :P

But is it normal for another larger window to pop-up about Avast 5 after the green box pops up? EVEN if you are disconnected from the internet?

Thanks again to anyone who reads this/replies.

"Program settings>Update (Basic)>", tick "manual" (Under "program update", not database.)
If you click "details", therein lie the options for disabling the various features of the notifications.

Thank you!
I found it. But I'm a little confused. What do I disable? Which one of them disables the green box?
Oh and I use the Free Avast as you can see. Version 4.8.  :)
Thanks so much for replying!  ;D

My mistake earlier, the "details" setting s appear to apply in respect of the database updates, so disregard that.
Just set the "program" update to manual, as I have.
I haven't had a sliding green box, yet.
(Maybe I haven't been scheduled for it, yet, so I'm not 100% sure this will work, but it should.)

Unchecking the obvious option ("Show sliding box after automatic update") doesn't work.  Nor does setting the updates to MANUAL.  See my post:  http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55720.msg470971#new

If unchecking the other options would fix the problem, please let me know too!

Hi little desert mouse.

I think un-ticking any of those options won't work, because it seems they apply to database updates.
Just set the option for "program update" (look in the lower pane of my picture above) to manual.

Do you know how to get the game  "Dune 2" to play in Windows XP?
(Just joking. It works well on '98. If I had '98)

Tarq57,

Setting Updates to Manual doesn't do it either (I was updating this information into the post above yours as you were writing your response - our posts missed each other!).

Mine has been set to manual since before Avast 5 was released.
I wonder if that is why I'm not getting the notification?
By that I mean, that maybe it's possible that now on your system the program already "knows" there is a program update available, it will keep prompting you?
I'll look at some more options. Off to work, now, so I'll be a few hours. Someone else possibly knows.

Misuzu,

Here's a fix that MAY work for you (at least it may stop interrupting your games):

Unfortunately, only part of my presentations are in fullscreen mode, so it doesn't solve my problem.

So has mine (so that's not it).

Have fun at work! :D
