Still confused as to what avast is suppose to do.
« on: February 17, 2010, 10:02:24 PM »
A few weeks ago I had a virus and those on the forum helped me to clear it up. This last weekend I got popup boxes saying that my files were infected and that I had a virus. The boxes were comming all over my desktop. I was also advised to purchase something called Antivirus software which I did not do. It said that my antivirus was out of date. I checked my "Windows security center and it showed that my Firewall was on and that my antivirus was out of date which I was sure it wasn't. I couldn't get rid of these popup screens. Then porno started to appear every minute. I'd close them down but they would come back. I checked with my porno blocker company, (safeeyes), and they said that if I have a virus they can't block the porno. I could not get on the internet to ask for advise from the forum or use any of my programs except avast and super spyware so I ran a through scan of avast, (took six hours), and it said no virus found but all the popup windows kept comming including the porno. I tried shutting down and restarting but no change. I tried my internet server but they couldn't get me back on line so I then called avast tech support and they said they could look into it for $129.00. I said I have avast 4.8 pro so why do I have to pay for tech support help, but that fell on deff ears. Finally after two days of all this I managed to find a friend who came over and got everything back to normal. Just what he did I don't know but all is working fine now and no charge. I checked the security center again and avast is on and nothing about being out of date. I run avast, super spyware and malware every few days so how come avast doesn't stop this stuff from getting on my computer. My wife told me to find another antivirus.

Not an antivirus is perfect. I mean, avast could drop some infections some time...
But it's difficult to say as the tech guy should tell what did he do.
I suggest you upgrade (for free) the 4.8 to 5 version.

Anti-Virus software is one thing - but it can not protect 100%. No AV provides that. In fact, Avast is amongst the best concerning detection.
However, malware such as trojans, worms etc. have many ways to infiltrate. Opening unknown Emails, executing attachments...)
A good protection:
Avast5 (free)
Comodo firewall (free, be sure just to install the firewall)
ad-aware (free)
+
"Brain.exe" (no offense intended, but many people just think that with AV programs they're 100% safe - which is wrong)

Another good idea is to create a restricted user account for everyday purpose.

As to malware removal: this forum has lots of savvy guys that will take you step by step through the process if needed, with essexboy being the "man for the tough stuff".

Wishing you a virus free future

I just downloaded avast 5. I had 4.8 Pro and it asked if I had free or pro. I clicked on Pro and it went ahead and installed Pro. It's asking for $27.00. I guess that's ok as I'm sure Pro has more features then free.

If you had avast 4.8 pro and still have some time left on the 4.8 pro license then you can convert the license to work with 5.0 pro.

- avast! 5 Pro license convert from 4.8 Pro license. Try http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php now, fill in the form giving your email and 4.8 Pro License key and they will send the new license file to you (presumably it will check you have a legit 4.8 Pro license first).

How to register avast 5 pro on page 7 - 8

No... do not pay... your 4.8 license period should be valid. Follow David's instructions before.
