mail client blocked by changing server settings
« on: June 28, 2004, 05:12:44 AM »
I use Netscape 7.1 and Outlook express with a DSL connection.  Sparodically - perhaps not each time I open a mail client, but almost each time, the server names are changed to 127.0.0.1 and the user name is changed to the true user name with "#servername" appended, where "servername" is the correct server name.

I understand this is "supposed" to happen.  Somehow that is how Avast diverts email though its scanning process.  The problem is that my email clients, both of them, are unable to connect with the ISP until I change the server names back.

I saw instructions on FAQ for Outlook Express, but is this going to solve the problem for Netscape as well.  What about when I switch to Mozilla or Firebird?

Did you allow SMTP authentication?
Does ashMaiSv.exe is running in your system? If not, can you repair avast installation and run Mail Protection Wizard?

Wellcome to forums  :)

rc,

Netscape is classified as a "front end" such as AOL.  Avast will not be able to work with it since it becomes its' own mail client.

Firefox and Mozilla work ok with Avast since they are true browsers such as IE and Opera.  Some other IE overlays are Avant and MyIE2.
All work fine with Avast.

Good Luck

Netscape is owned by AOL that's why AOL is so mad at Microsoft for giving away it's browser.  Poor AOL, it had to start offering Netscape for free also. :)

No expert but I use Firefox/Thunderbird and Avast works perfectly with both under Windoze XP Pro.  Emails are scanned no problem.  I gave up on Outlook many years ago and have Thunderbird set to only allow txt and not html emails.  Also I never open any attachments in my mail, even from known contacts.  I'm not being paid by the Avast team BTW!

My connection is through NTL cable in the U.K.

This is a users forum. There are very few on here who are paid by Alwil.
Almost all of us are either users or sometimes abusers of this great product. ;D

I guessed that Bob, just thought I should qualify my previous post.  it sounded a little like a sales pitch and not a compliment!
