That is the data that avast! is scanning at that time.

That is where avast! unpacks the data it is scanning.

The file date says, they are created yesterday, and they are still present if I even stop the avast service etc.

edit: I can also delete them, i.e. they are not locked by avast process.
thanks.

When avast has completed its scan it should clear those files, I suspect you have other security software that is stopping that happen.

What other resident security software do you have installed ?
If there is another resident security application when avast creates these files another scanner can lock the files, blocking avast from clearing them.

Stop the self-defence module and you can manually delete them, remember to enable the self-defence after you are done.

Hello David and Scott,

I had (un-installed now) threatfire, but I doubt TF will block them, anyway as they are not coming back, so I guess you guys are right, and I managed to delete them without disabling avast SP.

So I think issue is closed.
thanks as always for your help.  :)

David, when you say avast should "clear" those tmp files when done with them, do you mean delete them?  On my system, I've got maybe a couple dozen of them, all zero-length.

Yes it should and it does so on my system.

I know that for a fact as I frequently use the _avast5_ folder when investigating reported malware on sites, etc. When that folder has been opened in preparation for that the only file there is the webshlock.txt file because I'm browsing and the web shield is running. When I open pages, etc unp*.tmp files are created and when I'm done investigating those are cleared.

avast housekeeping is deficient... files unp????????.tmp aren't cleaned at all...

Sorry Tech, but that certainly isn't the case for me.

Lucky you... your avast did not crash a lot of times...

Well crashing is likely to leave something behind, but that has nothing to do with housekeeping as you mention if it crashes whilst scanning that won't complete and won't clean the temp folder.
