Avast 5.0.418 making PC painfully slow?
« on: February 24, 2010, 02:15:49 PM »
Anyone shed light on improving a prevailing issue with VERY slow performance since updating to .418?

I use predominantly half a dozen programs at a time - flipping between them is now painfully slow. Browsing the web (Firefox), opening emails in Outlook 2007 or docs in Word 07 from email attachments, etc,. now seems incredibly hindered and frsutratingly slow.

I am losing the will to put up with this so any ideas will be gratefully received.

PC Spec: Dell E6400ATG running Intel Core2 Duo T9550 2.66GHz / 4Gb RAM / Vista Bus 32bit SP2 / Oodles of fast disk space / decent video, etc. Apps include Spysweeper, Memeo Backup.

Where did you update from? avast 5, lower version or avast 4.8.
If the later: how did you update from 4.8?

auto install of v5.0 straight over the top of 4.8 i.e. 4.8 was not removed first and 5.0 removed 4.8.

There are some complaints here about this updating from 4.8 to 5...
Did you reboot?

Anyway, this might be the better way:

- uninstall v5
- reboot to safe mode
- run aswclear5 exe (find link in my signature)
- search for any alwil or avast folder on your c:-drive and delete them
- reboot to normal mode
- run CCleaner to clean registry (or any other tool you prefer for registry cleaning like tuneup)
- download avast 5 setup file from avast.com
- install fresh
- reboot
- register via GUI

Avast 5 should not slow down your computer with your specs?. Have you tried to run any antspyware programes ie MBAM malware bytes & Spybot search and destroy. Good free ones to use, as spyware if installed on your computer will consume many computer resourses in ram memory. Is the computer clean inside as dirty overheating fans will cause your computer to slow down due temp monitoring via BIOS! Noted that you are running Webroot spysweeper. I have used this in the past and this is a good program except this runs on boot up and checks memory and is very intensive in the computer registry webroot did slow my computer way down too low once the paid subscription run out was too expensive per year used the free ones with out any problems. I think if you eventually remove Webroot your computer will run much faster though?

Thanks for the suggestions bobo1 but the problem is def not Spysweeper, or Malware, and it isn't hardware related. The problem is Avast 5 and specifically update 418 because it was running fine before 418, and if you disable the shields it runs very fast. I am looking for help to tweak or fix Avast without stripping out perfectly good apps that are working well.

Thanks Zyndstoff. Your suggestion was already my exact backup plan (with the last resort being to uninstall Avast 5 -shame though because its one the faster AVs I've used -well it was until .418).

Well, yes, I think that's the best way instead of tweaking on every corner of the installed version without knowing what's wrong.
Would appreciate feedback.

Will feedback. I have got Tech Support onto it. They're analysing the logs so will update when we have a resolution.
