I have a customer who has been using avast free 4.8 with a JAWS screen reader. She was recently upgraded to Avast 5 and nolonger has any ability to access the Avast with her screen reader. Does this mean she now needs a new AV program and are there any recomended ( she moved to avast when Norton and AVG became unfriendly to the screen readers).

It will hopefully be improved in the next builds - but yes, the initial version of avast! 5.0 isn't very friendly in this respect.

So what is the immediate solution? Its OK to say it wil get better but that is not helpful now.

I guess so.  Probably, possible option is to downgrade to 4.8 and wait till 5.x becomes more "friendly" in this respect.

You can find 4.8 version here.

but is there still support for 4.8? the message displayed causing the update in the first place said that support was ended.

Support for 4.8 won't stop immediately and it has been said that it will probably continue for 6-12 months after 5.0 was released/ This however, was the personal thought of one of the developers (not official), so I would say it is a reasonable guestimate.

Again - Do you really think a reply to a topic that is over a year old on a very old avast version advisable. The OP hasn't been back to the forums since 25 Feb 2010.
