IE no longer working

I installed Avast 8 and now I can not get on the internet without an error message stating that Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.  I turn off my Web Shield and now i can get on any webpage.  How can I fix this without turning off my Web Shield.  I'm using explorer 7 and have a windows vista.  Any help would be wonderful.

sounds like a possible bad install, go here get the utility uninstaller http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and then do a clean install of Avast 5. In addition i would also upgrade to IE 8 FOR BETTER SECURITY http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/thank-you.aspx

I believe there is no avast 8? Do you mean avast 4.8?
