can I run Avast 5.0 in safemode?
« on: March 05, 2010, 10:41:07 PM »
I ran Avast yesterday on a heavily infected computer and after three hours the system shut down and wouldn't let me back into Win XP Pro. I entered in safemode today and tried to restart Avast and it said "unable to start scan" "there are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper". What does that mean? Am I not allowed to run Avast form safemode? Could Avast have messed up my win XP? There are so many virus's on it that maybe one of those has taken over so much so that it shut down after the Avast program tried to capture it. Obviously I'm not that saavy with computers hence the many virus's I am now trying to take care of. Any help would be appreciated.

It could have messed while trying to disinfect.
Did you send files to Chest or direct deleted?

Can you logon?
If so, you can use avast at logon time.
You can download it here: http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/avastEvangelist/avast_at_logon_by_Tech.exe

I never got through the full scan because like I said, it shut my computer down unexpectedly and upon restart the computer started to loop over and over again into startup. XP won't let me login. It acts like it will at startup but then never does and starts the process in a loop all over again. That is why I started it in Safemode and now that I'm in, I can't use Avast or Malwarebytes or even microsoft updates. Am I missing something about using safemode? I'll look at your links you gave me but I'm not sure I know what YOUR talking about. I am no computer pro. I know very little, really. Thanks for your quick response!

Windows Updates can't run at Safe Mode.
avast is not designed to run in Safe Mode either. Although it could be uninstalled.
MBAM should run at Safe Mode. Something is messed in your computer.

Maybe overinstallation can solve the problem and you won't lose your programs, settings, data, files, etc.
Just choose 'Repair' installation of Windows and install 'over' the old installation.

Although I think it won't work if your computer is deeply infected ::)

Unfortunately it's not possible to run an avast scan in Safe Mode (unless you have the paid edition in which you can use the command-line scanner, ashCmd.exe, which works even in Safe Mode).

Anyway, try using the avast Boot-time Scan. It should give better results than scanning from Safe Mode anyway.

Thanks everyone! I will try boot time scan first and if that won't work then I will print out all links given to me and read how to reinstall WIn XP. I hope I can handle that one  ::)
