Absurdly slow updating in new version
« on: January 18, 2011, 04:52:09 PM »
Recently downloaded the latest version of Avast home edition. I had been using 4.8.
This latest edition is skunked. I'm on a high speed line and yet the virus updating either won't go through or if it does it takes an absurdly long long time to download and another absurdly long time to install.
I'm using Win 7 ultimate.
What's the problem and what's the fix?

I know us free users are the crash test dummies for each updated version that avast sells, but this is pretty bad that it won't even update it's virus definitions itself.

I want to add I did use the uninstall utility and reinstalled the avast and also tried the repair process via the add-remove process..neither made the avast program update definitions better or at all.

I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Okay..I did everything you suggested (except buy the PRO version) and starting up in safemode prior to my first forum entry.
Since reading your reply I removed the entire program without problem.
Downloaded another remove untility, etc.
I downloaded the latest version, which is the same as the one I had already installed and uninstalled..

went ahead and did it all over again while in safemode.

Started the update. That was 45 minutes ago and there's still only a tinge of orange showing in the process bar which has gotten no further than when it began and still nothing has been updated even though avast states I need to update latest virus definitions.
sorry to keep beating this in but man..4.8 updates were flawless and quick and never a problem.
So much for progress sometimes, eh?

pressman, it took me 8 seconds...
Something is wrong with your computer. Please, upload (attach) the avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log
(or the shorter C:\Users\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log).

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.
