Avast 5.0 won't start
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:29:16 PM »
Recently installed avast 5, after about a week of it running I boot up to find that the avast icon in the taskbar with the little x on it (warning icon). I open Avast, I click Fix now, and it asks to run the 'VisthAux.exe /runservice 2' application. I click Continue (from UAC) and nothing happens.

OS: Vista Home, 32-bit

Misc Info:
-When I go to things such as 'Maintenance' in the avast program, all the information shows as 'Unknown.' This is for things such as Current Version..etc
-I have already tried to re-install.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any other security program installed? In the past?
Did you try an installation from the scratch or a repair/upgrade from 4.8?

No other security ones, perhaps a trial norton, but I did a clean uninstallation of that for sure (their tool + revo).
My re installation process was:
-remove current (5.0)
-boot
-install new (5.0)
-boot

Hi Everybody!

Me too, I could not start Avast free, and so I seek help in this forum!

I downloaded the program from the webpage and installed it on my pc with a completly new installed Win 2k version (SP4). I got an error message: The dll File MSVCR90 could not be found in the paths C:\WINNT\system32\Wbem; C:\WINNT\system32; C:\WINNT\system; C:\WINNT, C:\programs\Alwil Software\Avast5; C:\programs\Intel\DMIX. ??? After deleting Avast, restarting and reinstalling, the message came again - should I try to download again, or is Win 2k simply too old (I like it on this old pc (P III 500MB Memory) - I had only a few problems through years ...)

Thanks in advance and greetings from Austria - no Kangoroos, but mountains  :D

Wandler,

The last of these offers an explanation of why MSVCR90.dll is missing.

Thanks Olddog for your promt reply!

I only checked your last link, and after a while (reading the whole topic 3 times ... my english is not that particular) I understood (as usual at MS the left hand knowes not, what the right hand is doing (a german proverb)) and did what there was to do: I downloaded win rollup1 for sp4 and reinstalled avast and - oh wonder - it works!!!

Actually I could have done the search for MSVCR90 before sending my Help-cry, so thanks for your patient help.

Early spring greetings from Austria
