5.0 updates
« on: March 06, 2010, 08:55:03 PM »
I'm using avast 5.0. I looked at updates and it has automatic updates. I want to use manual update so I clicked the box for manual but I can't find anyway to manualy update. Hope I explained this right. Also, what is Boot-time Scan?

Avast Antivirus offers a "boot time" virus scan of your PC. This allows the antivirus engine to scan all of the files on your hard drive before any other programs load - useful in cases where you have an infection which cannot be cleaned because the "file is in use"

There should be a button to click, to update......look under the maintenance tab....i think

Check the image, click to expand, for the most part you would be using the Update engine and virus definitions button.

Personally I feel that there is little value in setting the Update engine and virus definitions to manual, in fact the contrary, since these updates are incremental and even on dial-up as I am shouldn't be an issue.

I'll take your advise and go back to automatic. Also I checked "permantely connected to the internet" as I use Road Runner, as opposed to "I use dial up modem." Is that what I should check?

No, leave both at the default settings, unchecked.

There are many reported problems when people have selected one of these options, so I would advise leaving the settings at the default.

You're welcome.

The problem relating to the problem on setting it to dial-up connection is by all accounts resolved in an upcoming program update, 5.0.460, so that too may ensure any possible issue in setting it to permanently connected doesn't happen.
