Avast 5.0 Free Slow Down

Running XP Pro on new hi perf computer.  Upgraded from 4.8 to 5.0 and everything is slow.  Opening files, checking mail, opening & running internet explorer / Fire fox etc.  Disable Avast all is well.  I have tried to change settings but it is still way too slow.  Any body else have this experience?

Any other security program that could interfere?
Maybe you can try an avast 5 installation from the scratch.

Only other security is windows firewall that comes with xp.  Yesterday I downloaded and used the Avast Uninstaller and then reloaded 5.0.  At first I kept getting subscription notice errors and the program would not run.  After several reboots it started working but everything was slow again.  I uninstalled 5.0 and went to 4.8 and all is well.  I'll stick with 4.8 untill Avast no longer updates it then I'll try again.  Thanks

Trout, I suggest an installation from the scratch and using the avast uninstall tool to remove both 4.8 and 5.
Then install the v5.
The support of avast 4.8 ends (unofficially) by the end of 2010.
