Can't start Mail Shield

Hi There....

I recently installed Free Avast vrs 5.0.418 on My Son's Vista Home Premium SP2 Laptop.

I did not uninstall Avast Vrs 4.? (which had expired) first. Everything seemed to go well with the install and license code etc. The only odd thing was that none of the Real Time Shields were running after the restart.

I manually started each shield in turn and they all seem to run O.K. with the exception of the Mail Sheild. When I click Fix Now, Start or Turn on from any of the various windows - absolutely nothing happens except the warnings saying that the 'system is not fully protected' persist, and the Mail sheild window says 'Service Stopped'.

The mail is not encrypted in any way and I have run a full system scan.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Have you tried avast repair and reboot?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Very many thanks - the repair fixed it!

Had to wait for a full Malwarebytes scan to complete (it found 4 nasties in the registry) before I could try the repair.
