IE8 runs fine in sandbox here, you should start a new thread if your problem persists.

I'm still using Avast 5.0.418, and have Avast set to ask when program updates are available.  Avast does know that there is a program update available as there is a button to update  the program on the Summary page.  I'm waiting to see if the notification alert popup window shows.  If for some reason the popup is missed, will it reoccur and at what intervals?

Hi GJ,

It's approximately seven days from the date of official release and after that, the notice comes up each time you boot your computer.  (Assuming, "Ask when update is available" is checked.)  I think I am going to wait for the pop-up notice barring something unusual happening because what I have now 5.0.418 is working well.

When an update is available, I have Avast! set to ask. I just found out there was an update to .462 while surfing at Wilder's Security forum. Is there a bug in the notification setup? This is the second update I've done since I installed v5, and didn't get notified. Do I have to check the forum more often?  :)

Update notifications are usually cycled over 7 days to balance server load and this .462 build has only been released today, so it isn't unusual that you won't have been notified yet.

Given that avast 5.0 has only been out just over a month, they are actually still cycling through over 100 million users to update from 4.8 to 5.0. So that to might also have an impact on the usual 7 day cycle for update notification.

Got the "ask" popup notification right after first coming online today, shortly after noon Eastern time, and the update went just fine.

Slightly off-topic, and strictly out of curiosity ... anyone know if the order in which that notification goes out to users, on that 7-day server-cycle thing, is newly randomized with each new upgrade, or is it more or less constant?  I seem to consistently get the notification quite early after a new version's release.
