Updated two XP pro SP3 without problems - both set to automatically program update. The laptop had not been turned on for 2-3 days, so when it turned on and I invoked the GUI, I was alerted to a new update available. It did not automatically update; however, I may not have given the machine enough time to catch up with the definitions update before I forced an update, which proceeded normally.
However, I have a question - the second machine is on most of the time but only gets occasional usage. In other words, Avast may have notified of an update, but we were not sitting there when it occurred. It did update automatically, but until I invoked the GUI (two days later) I would not have known to reboot. My question is: what are the consequences, if any, of not rebooting immediately after updating? Is the latest version ineffective in some way? Is virus protection compromised in any way?
It would seem to me that somehow the need to reboot should be eliminated, thus making the automatic update transparent to the user - and truly automatic. Naturally, I don't know the technical complications involved; however, it seems AVG never requires a reboot and automatic updates take place without user intervention and are completely automatic.
I do believe Avast has truly good product here and I recommend it to friends. I'm just trying to make it a bit better.
Thanks, Avast team
