Is Avast Needed? / Vs. resident MBAM?
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:38:03 AM »
Hi there,

I have a few general queries?

Have been using Avast AV for some time, no issues either with the earlier version or the present. Prior to using Avast used AVG.

1. Avast has not been of any help rather than just consuming system resources & a false sense of protection……could be cause of my surfing habits.......I find antispywares more of a help like MBAM & SAS etc….they have blocked tracking cookies, detected malware Trojans, blocked malicious IPs etc…...MBAM resident is more useful /effective than Avast AV … please do correct me if I am wrong?

2. Secondly I feel so naked when I do get connected to the internet after a fresh install....If I surf about autos, get spam/junk mails from auto makers, auto insurance……same for watches, cells etc….to summarize no privacy using windows, tried  Linux but had compatibility issues specially when it came to professional use…….is it cause of IE……my machines have rarely got infected with viruses at times only cookies, malwares…..hacking is more of a threat than viruses..any measures to protect privacy using windows, besides firewalls?

3. Lastly like antibiotic drugs some being bacteriostatic & some bacteriocidal…… is Avast AV viricdal software or virostatic… & how vast is its spectrum?

Just my personal thoughts……could totally be wrong,

Hoping to hear your views.

OS: W7 Pro 32bit.

Protection:  Avast 12.3 Free, MBAM.

MBAM is a specialised tool and i think the detection is close to 200 000  avast is close to 2 500 000
so you need both

That is why you need one (web mail) mail adress for internet bullshit and one for person to person use so you don`t get spam on the person to person mail
Recomended: Gmail have a very good spamfilter

Well let me give you a difference between avast free and avg free.
Avast gives you more shields protection than Avg
Avast gives Rootkit protection whereas the avg free don't
Mbam scanner is not that powerful to prevent rootkit but avast is.
Blocked IP is not that useful...but avast and mbam is a great combination!

@ Shiw Liang

You need IP Address Lookup:
http://ip-address-lookup-v4.com

MBAM blocks known malware sites when the browser requests the address.

IP Protection Module

In v1.40, Malwarebytes introduced IP Protection into Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, to prevent the user being infected in the first place. The following is information on what this does, and how it works.
