Bug in new version 5.0.462: email message corrupted
« on: March 09, 2010, 07:56:05 PM »
I did just update the program from version 5..0.418 to 5.0.462.
My settings in the mail protection are such that I let Avast add a message into the email confirming that the email was checked and is clean.
Since the new version, this message is corrupted. What I get to see is:

?????????‡???????????????4???????????????›?????????????????‰???????????????????????????????????????????

rather than a message...

(uups, not sure why the question marks I see appear here as smileys... but they are question marks in my note)

I am using Outlook as email-programm, so this should run via the plugin. I am running Windows XP SP3. Testing the same with Thunderbird seems to be ok - so the issue seems to be in the outlook-plugin.

Had worked correctly in the previous version - with the exception that I saw sometimes incoming emails without the note - which then appears a half a minute (or so) later... strange

If you have three or more ? the forum software takes that as a smiley code fro confused smiley.

Also if a foreign language font is used that you don't have the font for it can generate the ? as a replacement for the character, I don't know if that is the case here or not.

Have you rebooted yet after the update ?

yes, I rebooted after the update. I also tried a repair option, issue remains.

I should add that I use a German version of Avast - not sure it's the same in other languages.

What happens if you temporarily disable inbound email scanning in the Mail Shield settings, I don't know how that works in relation to MS Outlook (I don't use that) as that is an all in one now with MS Outlook support in built in.

What version of MS Outlook are you using ?
Is the avast Plug-in MS Outlook still running ?

The language versions should be the same function wise other than translation I believe.

Well, if I disable the mail shield I also get no message (not unexpected), so also no corrupted message.

The outlook plugin is running - at least the respective screen appears when starting outlook and it is also visible in the add-on manager.

I am using an elder version of Outlook (2002), but from other earlier issues it never seemded to matter which version is used (except the latest one)

Well I didn't say to disable the mail shield only the inbound scanning, I don't know if in disabling the mail shield completely the plug-in would still be expecting to have it running presumably, hence the no emails.

It is strange that this only happens in MS Outlook and not in Thunderbird (the malformed emails), unfortunately not being an MS Outlook user I can't be any practical help on that.

The only thing I can thing to do now since a repair didn't do anything is to do a clean reinstall:
Download the latest version of avast (if you didn't save it previously) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here ensure you get the version5 one (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0), aswClear5.exe and save it to your HDD.
  • 1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.

ok, did a full clean-up process and re-installation - same situation, no improvement.
I will turn off the messages so far.

By the way: if I disable only inbound email scanning, i still see the same corrupted message also in outgoing mails.

I'm at a loss as to what else to suggest as I'm totally in the dark on MS Outlook.

You could try opening the Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL Accounts and see if there are any settings that appear incorrect.

For me the problem is the inconsistency of the problem thunderbird works yet Outlook doesn't, so I'm going to have to hope one of the developers can provide any help.

Tried allof the above to my knowledge and abilitities - no result.
I also do not think it is related to the settings, as the previous version (5.0.418) worked with the same settings as well.
Hope that the developers have an idea

I would remove the extend.dat file out of your outlook application data folder with outlook closed.

Restart outlook and try again. Their may be old addons from previous versions or other av software it is still trying to load corrupting the messages.

After this it may be wise to reinstall avast once more to have the proper avast antispam addon reinstalled if you have AIS.

OK, just to give a response that I owe to all supporters here: Also after deleting the file EXTEND.DAT the same error remains. Can't help than thinking really about a bug - it is known that changes had been made on the  (see other threads here) in order to clean up problems when the message function was switched on - but now it seems (to me) like a new problem.
I also tried with "Text Only" format rather then HTML, as in the recent bug only  were effected - but same issue.
I switched now off the message function and will wait for some bright idea - or a new software update

I have exactly the same problem with this version, since last update.  I am also using Outlook 2002 so there must be some connection here.  I am based in the UK.  I hope a future update will fix this bug.

same problem with my
Work Computer XP SP3 Outlook 2002 (avast pro)
Home computer Xp SP3 Outlook 2002 (free version)
Avast version 5.0.462

soon after the latest program update I sent tech support an email to report the bug with a cut & past of what the note said before the last update and cut & past of what is is doing now just a bunch of question marks since the last update

they said this...

unfortunately I can't reproduce this problem (the configuration is avast! Free/Pro antivirus 5.0.462, MS Office Outlook 2003, MS Windows XP/SP3, both html/plain text messages) - could you please attach the configuration details (email client type and version, mail format...)?

Odd they have not heard about the problem

Anyway I am at level 2 tech support will keep you all posted.
