Is Avast really Scanning
« on: June 14, 2010, 02:17:06 PM »
First post so please excuse me if I do something very n00bish.

I am currently running Avast 5.0.545.
Until recently I had to suspend the mail shield while using newsleecher supersearch.
I used to do this for the 10 minute time frame and made no changes making it persistent.

Now, suddenly, I can use supersearch without turning anything off.
I haven't seen anything mentioned here or at newsleecher that talks about this so my question is this:

Is there a test file somewhere that Avast should tell me is present if the program is actually scanning?
I mean it looks like it's scanning but how can I be sure...   Paranoia ;)

Thanks!

I just created and sent my self an EICAR file and it detected it.  Dooh! Sorry for wasting everyone's time.

Did you "create" an eicar file?
Changes on it make it invalid.

You can also proceed to 'Realtime Shields-File system shields' ,here you can find the files detected from boost of your computer. If it shows 'Files Scanned/Infected 0/0', it is not scanning...

It means the current count on my Script Blocking (as opposed to Network - 876, Standard - for Files - 599, and web 252).

Changes on it make it invalid.

In notepad typed "X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*" then saved as eicar.com

Avast immediately detects deletes.... Did it with scanner off and emailed to myself, reenabled scanner and detected on download.  Yeah, Avast!!

Perhaps ziucqea meant boot of your computer.
BTW saw those numbers but wasn't sure, even though it said scanning that it was actually doing that.
Appreciate all the discussion.  :)

Chenwin, your e-mail is showing.
You can go above to your Profile>>Account related settings to hide from the public.
Unless you don't mind having it out there. ;)
