We are talking about 2 distinct function of one overall program.
1. The on-access  scanner which should always be active.
It keeps you save during the normal operation of your computer.
2. The anti virus program itself.  After the initial full scan, I run mine once a month as a precaution incase something slipped thru.
The full scan should be run in safe mode so that it has access to most of the files on your computer.
If it finds something, I would suggest that you quarantine it by putting it into the chest.  That put's it out of harms way but, if needed, could always be reached.
I hope this help. :)

no i meant the other program you download from http://www.avast.com/eng/products/free_software/cleaner/avast_virus_cleaner.html , or was you talking about that aswell?
If so what is the point of having 2 programs.

avast! Virus Cleaner is a simple standalone remover. It is meant to be used in cases when you already are infected with some of the common viruses (note that the number of viruses avast! Virus Cleaner is capable to remove is very limited). It doesn't feature any resident protection; it's just a small tool you run (no installing required) when you need to clean the malware.
So, you don't have to use it - just stick to avast! 4 Home.

(Btw, a special version of the Cleaner is also included in the VPS file; if avast! 4 Home detects a virus that avast! Virus Cleaner can remove better than avast! 4 Home, it will offer you the possibility to start it).
