Avast 5 (Free) NNTP Usenet Newsgroup Issue
« on: February 06, 2010, 02:00:23 PM »
NNTP Usenet Newsgroup protection worked flawlessly on Avast 4.8, but since downloading Avast 5 Free today I'm getting Outlook Express error messages "The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server"
Configuration:
   Account: text.news.virginmedia.com
   Server: text.news.virginmedia.com
   Protocol: NNTP
   Port: 119
   Secure(SSL): 0
   Code: 800ccc0f
I've subsequently had to switch off NNTP protection in the Avast 5 Mail Shield settings to enable usenet messages to be downloaded.  Am using OE6.

Any ideas as to how to overcome this issue?  Thanks in advance.

Just to say I'm getting the same problem with Windows Live Mail after downloading and installing v.5 Free.

Please start your own new topic please if it isn't exactly the same, e.g. relates to NNTP and same error message.

The error message is a bit strange in that it at least shows a connection was made so the Mail Shield settings would appear to be correct or I think you would get a different error.

Ensure that if your NNTP account requires authentication, that you have the user name and password details set in the OE, Tools Accounts, select the account used for NNTP, Server settings as avast won't be able to connect.

Try this in the avast UI, Real-time Scanners, Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL Accounts and ensure that your NNTP account, Encryption setting is set to none.

I too had the same problem connecting with my news service (Giganews).  I received this from their tech support:

If you use Avast, please note that this security software transmits encrypted data (SSL) over port 563. To disable this feature go to the
Troubleshooting tab -> Network Redirect Settings -> and delete 119 from the NNTP box.

I made the change and connected without any further problems.

Making that change, effectively disabled protection on the received NNTP traffic.

Thanks DavidR for your comments and suggestion.

I'm pleased to advise that having reported the issue directly via the Avast Support Centre, that subsequent changes were made to Avast 5 and after a recent Usenet re-install, everything started working normally.  Now the Usenet server has automatically become listed in the SSL Accounts section of the Mail Shield (which it had not at the time of my original post).  So it's currently showing Protocol: NNTP, Port: 119, Encryption: None.   :)
