Avast splash screen problem?
« on: July 03, 2004, 07:01:54 PM »
I have had a bit of an issue over the last couple of days with the Avast splash screen.

The first problem appeared last night - I right click on the icon in th equick launch tray and left click on Start Avast Antivirus to run it.

Last night when I did this the splash screen launched and when it had finished scanning the memory it disappeared as usual but the Avast interface did not launch.  I tried again and this time it launched normally.

This morning I launched it again (I'd had a virus last night and wanted to be sure it had gone.  The splash screen launched with the attached error message.  I tried again - same thing.  Pressed Control-Alt-Delete - the Windows Task Manager showed the Avast splash screening running twice, so I ended both processes and each time the interface loaded.  I closed down one interface and then was able to scan as normal.

Since then Avast has loaded normally but this is so odd I wondered if it could be some kind of bug in the latest update.

I'm running Windows XP service pack 1 with IE 6 and Netscape 7.1.

Two posible solutions:

1. Uninstall / boot / Install / boot

2. Go to the <avast>\Data folder
    Open the file avast4.ini in Notepad and search for the line:

    Database=ODBC

    Change the line to:

    Database=XML

Thank you very much Technical, learned today that Notepad has a search facility :) never thought of looking for it before.

I opted for editing the avast4.ini file and that worked a treat.

Sorry RejZoR... I'm always forggeting your avast! External Control application.
No more: I changed my signature.

Gillie, download, see and enjoy the fantastic AEC of RejZoR  ;)
There you have a feature of changing the type of database (ODBC or XML).

Hehe hope i'm not annoying with AEC,its just easier to flip the switch to XML then changing entries in INI file. Especially for those who are not familiar with such editing.

Ok, you deserve it. AEC is almost as good as avast itself  ;D
We should have it added to avast! package (if you 'sell' them to them)  8)

OK so this AEC is some kind of programming application?  I'll take a look at it some time but do bear in mind I can only follow instructions at this stage, I'm not a programmer myself and don't know any of the programming languages other than HTML, Javascript and CSS - normally I wouldn't touch a system file without guidance!

In this case I figured it was pretty safe because if things went wrong it would just be a matter of reinstalling Avast and re-downloading the updates;-) I do keep the original download file in My Documents just in case and back everything up regularly!

Gillie2tat, don't worry... AEC is a simple standalone application but very powerfull.
You can follow the window instructions and change the type of database (ODBC to XML) without having to edit the avast4.ini file.
It's easy, download it and run it  8)
