just updated mine today 5.0.507 rechecked the insert clean message to out going mail did a test and....

Just went back and forth with support.

This what they said and had me try

Hi,

could you try this workaround, please:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5

avast5.ini

create anywhere section [MailScanner]

and under this section

(add) key "UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1"

I tried what was suggested to no avail.
I am still getting the question marks.

I informed them and this was the reply.

Unfortunately we have no more solution for you then turn off the clean-messages.

Go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then Please select your country: then Signature: and put information about your system just like my signature about your system just like my signature so that the helpers can offer pertinent advice.

If it is good for DavidR an avast! Überevangelist then it is good information to have in your signature.

FYI
Upgraded to 5.0.533 still no fix to this problem.
Did a clean install used the Avast removal tool and did a reboot.

Rec'd this from Tech Support 5/5/2010

Hi, thank you for your information.
there is probably compatibility problem with Outlook XP (2002) this outlook is too old and we have no chance to fix it for it. Newest versions of outlook have no this issue.
