I think the key here Mike_fra is environment.

Zyndstoff has successfully instated an environment in which webshield will not block his internet connection.

The wider problem is that each user brings to each system their own particular environment, be that what it is at that time and in that place for that particular person. There are unfortunately no universal solutions, beyond what is acknowledged as good computer practice, and what is recommended as accepted defaults and settings by manufacturers and distributors of computer hardwares and/or softwares. And even these guidelines and pointers are often only practicable to a certain extent.

Best follow Zyndstoff advise and give the forum some idea of the environment in which yr problem is being found.

Signed both  ;)
You're doing a good job!
Keep it up!

I have discovered another cause for this problem.

I had exactly the same problem, no webpages displayed when webshield was running. I traced it down to an old copy of Norton Internet Security which I had un-installed. Although it has been uninstalled using add/remove programs it was still causing this problem.

I downloaded and ran the Norton Removal Tool and Avast webshield problem went away.

Yes, that may well be the case. However, this topic is like an over and above the usual suspects checks which would have been suggested, firewall blocking the web shield or another security application or remnants of previous AVs.

I am not  comfortable  messing with the registry either.   So far,   I am in limbo with my issues.      Nice fix, but only if one is   comfortable with messing with the registry.  not me.    :-\

Confirming this FIXED my web shield "blocking everything-HTTP problem"!

I already had the keys in my registry set to %WINDIR%\Temp and %WINDIR%\tmp but it looks like AVAST doesn't like that path, even if it is valid... Changed this to %SystemDir%\Temp and it fixed it instantly!

This is weird though because I have this WIndows 7 installation since December and AVAST never complained about, in my case, problem started with the 6.0.1125 upgrade!
