 ???

This most likely will be my last post on this BB.

To me Temp. means Temp. and not permanent!

As I told you I was new to AVAST. I did not want or need any hassles. I don't want to have to make any adjustments, either the program is easy for me to use or it is not. If not it is on to some other Anti Vir program. In this case it was on to another Anti Virus program.

Thanks
Wildman

I wish you luck in your endevors to find an anti-virus program that works as you want. Hopefully, it will also protect you from viruses.
Peace :o

Wildman, we can help you to adjust avast to your needs.
But we cannot say that you won`t have to make any adjustments. This is not avast. This will be a bad antivirus programm (the one without adjustments).

avast is very configurable and suits for a lot of users, conditions and so on. If you don`t want to learn a little about it, just let the default options and set for automatically updates.

More than this only if we give food directly into your mouth  ;D

Wildman, I hope you will give Avast a last chance. Like you I am using Win98 and wanted the best out of Antivir programs. I have tried Mcafee, AntiVir, AVG, and Etrust and since we both have Win98, I can tell you that you will have to mess around more with the other programs than with Avast and they are not even as good as Avast. It took me less than two minutes to change the ODBC to XML and get rid of the jet files from coming back and the process was very simple to fix.

The other thing is that you will get no support or very limited support from the other freeware software unless you pay $$$$ for the software.

Unfortunately you win some and sometimes, you loose some.

O.K. I'll give avast a fair chance! I redownloaded it last night.

Figured out how to change to XML, and am still looking at all the different settings.

I am sight impaired and get frustrated some times. If something does not work the way I think it should, I have little patience with it. I know this is not fair, that is why I am giving avast another shot.

Thanks

Glad to see you came back! The one nice thing about the forum is that the problems that people are experiencing are not always with Avast and sometimes with the same program and similiar operating system as you. So in the long run more than one individual can get help on fixing the same problem or someone out there might already have a solution to the problem to give you. Someone might help you out on one day and you might be able to help someone else down the road.

Hi whocares:

Yes it is I.

I don't know if I'll stay with avast or not. Have run into some problems since I installed it.

(1) Other than in safe mode, scan disk and defrag do not want to work.

(2) I use dial up, and now the machine does not easily want to connect to my provider.

(3) System now does not want to easily shut down.

Am still looking for the best FREE Virus program. All of them appear to have their problems. So far AVG has been the best, and if it were not for the situation of it not being compatible with a couple of programs on my machine, I would still be with AVG.

Thanks
Wildman

Guess we're all entitled to our own opinions. I used to have AVG7 on this computer. The key word are Used to have!
Have a nice day. :)

For defraging you might want to disable all of avasts scanners

(1) Other than in safe mode, scan disk and defrag do not want to work.

Quite strange... works perfectly for me in XP.
But you can download and use RejZoR's application called avast External Control (see link on my signature) and completely disable avast.

(2) I use dial up, and now the machine does not easily want to connect to my provider.

Well I use it both in XP and 98 for almost one year. No troubles...
How do you configure avast settings? (Connections tab: Basic, details and Advanced)

(3) System now does not want to easily shut down.

I need more information to help you...

If you are talking about it only half shutting down and you needing to press the power button to turn it off, try reinstalling windows over the top.
