Trying to re-register
« on: March 26, 2010, 04:29:23 PM »
Hello

I had Avast 4.x and it hadn't expired yet, but I downloaded Avast 5.0
I'm trying to re-register it, but when I go into Maintenance and click Register Now, nothing happens. So what do I do now?

Also in the interface, it says that my current registration will expire in 6 days. Should I wait for it to expire first and then try again?

Welcome to the forums, user69   :)

Did you install v5 over v4.8 ... or ... did you remove v4.8 first and then install v5?

Thanks for the welcome

Firstly, I'm not sure that it was v4.8
It might have been a little earlier than that (incase that makes a difference)

And I installed v5 over it. The FAQ said that the v5 installer would detect earlier versions and uninstall it automatically

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.
The best things in life are free.

Yeah or u could just check my post under "FAQ directions didn't work" OR another person gave a link where a 4--Pro version user could get a License Resend for Avast 5--see the link under the post by Jeff Thompson "Help--lost my hard copy---" If that link actually works (and I couldn't find it myself in the License Center) it will save u a lot of time

We're talking about the free version, I suppose?
Install from scratch, register new. Follow Tech's advice.

well if it's not the free version Zynd---then where is that Link of yours for the 4.--Avast Pro to Avast 5 Pro license Resend--LOL IF that Link doesn't work then it's off to Create Ticket in order to get a license resend for the paid Pro version

If the OP ever comes back he can answer the question about pro or free. I'll provide the link then, promised.
But the paid version users experiencing this problem normally are very much more embarrassed... and normally state the "I have paid for it" in the first post.  ;D

This is free version, I'll bet you.

I guess but I once had the free version and don't think I ever had to reregister--maybe I had that one-time license fee thing that some1 mentioned in another post. Eventually I upgraded to the Pro version

Well, yes one had to re-register avast 4 home once a year via website & Email.
Did that 5 years.

You still have to do this with avast 5 free, but it is much more comfortable via UI. No website, no mail. Just a few clicks and some inputs in the UI.

Maybe I just never had to reregister cause I was reinstalling after doing new installs of XP for awhile there--bad ram kept causing problems and I would get corrupted hard drive until I figured out the ram was causing all the problems and not my graphics adaptor---
