WD is built in to Vista and 7 so avast! 5 disables the real-time scanning component when installed.

MSE does that - disable automatically and completely Defender - but I never noticed that Avast did, not even the real time scanning part. This said, Defender is completely useless when Avast is installed.

On  XP SP3 that is true.

Windows Defender on Vista and Windows 7 is a completely different application than on XP.

WD is built in to Vista and 7 so avast! 5 disables the real-time scanning component when installed.

Can you show some solid evidence of this? WD claims to be fully functional on my 2 Windows 7 boxes running Avast 5 Free.
If Avast 5 is disabling WD its doing it wrong because WD claims its functioning normally. It should not be disabiling WD anyway.
Avast 5 does not have some of the protection WD has.

I only remember a post (by Vlk I think) to the effect that because WD was integrated into Vista and 7, and had some useful functions, potentially conflicting WD actions would be suspended by avast! installation.

yeah, Vlk also said Ipsec would get deactivated if you disabled the firewall in Windows Seven ;)

I believe that is incorrect. And if I find out it is correct, I'll (with sadness) be saying goodbye to Avast.

Today I installed the latest build of TrueImage 2010 build 7046. Once completed windows defender popped up wanting to send files to MS to be analyzed.
So its BS that Avast 5 disables Defender. See screen shot.
