Avast5 - mail failure
« on: March 26, 2010, 09:28:38 AM »
Hi all!
After a couple of years with Avast4.x yesterday (intrigued by the ads on the site) I decided to move to rel. 5 installing the 5.0.462.
Unfortunately, right away I noticed a malfunction in the mail handling.
Granted that I use Mail Washer rel. 6.5.3 (hence MW) together with Thunderbird rel. 3.0.3 (hence TB) when I start MW I get the following message:
"The POP Server is not responding appropriately, ensure that you have specified the address of a POP Server" then MW stops.
As an alternative, if I start TB directly (without using MW) the prgm starts a never ending loop and nothing is downloaded.
If I stop "Mail Protection" on Avast the mail is properly downloaded both thru MW and TB directly without any problem.
The mail provider is email.it.
POP3 is "popmail.email.it" (port 110) and SMTP is "smtp.email.it" (port 25).
The Safety Connection panel on TB says "STARTTLS, if available"; other options "None, STARTTLS, SSL/TLS".
I am not an IT technician so I do not know what's going on wrong but I know for sure that before the migration from 4.8 to 5 the mail system worked fine.
Currently I have two different possibilities:
1. use of web based system  >:(
2. use of MW+TB without Avast  >:( >:(
I also tried to come back to 4.8 but it's quite a mess ???

Dear Avast5, I am a little bit disappointed in you!
After two years of full satisfaction it's now the first time I'm facing a problem with a release that (in theory) should be better performing than the old one.
Any positive suggestions?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Regards.
Marco

In TB, disable SSL/TLS. Set to "none" for SMTP and POP.
In avast, email shield, expert settings, ssl-accounts, delete all listed settings.
reboot.
Should be working then.

Avast will provide safe connection to your Email-server.

Hi Zyndstoff
Many thanks for yr prompt reply!
Thus:
TB = OK
all SSL/TLS disabled. All set to "none" both POP and SMTP

Avast = 1/2 OK
I've a list with the following entries:
Provider X  POP3  port 995  SSL
Provider Y  POP3  port 110  TLS
Provider Z  POP3  port 110  none
Provider K  POP3  port 995  SSL
Provider Y  SMTP port 25  TLS
I've to roughly "...delete all listed settings." regardless of SSL/TLS POP/SMTP?

Thanks again for the patience.
Regards
Marco

Yes, delete all.
Avast will detect them anew if needed.

Hi Zyndstoff

All entries have been deleted.
The e-mail's flow is now regular and everything is back as before.
The only hassle has been to re-fill the passwords in every account (a trifle compared to the "panic" early on, just installed rel. 5...)

Sorry about late answer...
Are you jocking?!? That would be the limit...
Rather, I apologize to be a little bit slow on the uptake of such IT matters...
Zyndstoff, once again, many thanks again for your valuable help!

- Personally as a mailwasher pro user I have avast IgnoreProcess for mailwasher.exe. Since MailWasher doesn't download the complete email to do its analysis, it only downloads the headers, a small part of the body, it doesn't download images or attachments and it views what is downloaded in text only. Based on this I personally don't feel that any negligible risk worth scanning duplication, but the choice is yours.

By editing the EmailShield.ini file, [MailScanner] section using notepad. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\EmailShield.ini

[MailScanner]
IgnoreProcess=MailWasher.exe add this line if you don't already have an IgnoreProcess line.

Save the changes to EmailShield.ini and exit, the avast self-defence module will ask are you sure about the changes, etc. answer Yes.

The above file location is for XP so you might need to find it on Vista, etc.

Hi David!

A belated thank you for your contribution.

Yes, as a matter of fact, the features of Mail Washer don't make necessary the use of Avast.

It would be worthwhile freeing Avast from the M W cheching.

I'll try to add the mentioned line into the EmailShield.ini file hoping not to make a mess... ::)

Thanks and regards ;D
