Computer crashing since Avast update
« on: March 30, 2010, 07:12:32 PM »
Hi all

This morning Avast updated my PC and moments after the update it blasted back a message stating that netofponp.dll had a trojan. I elected to move it to the vault, but now any action on my PC pops up a message or ten that advises this DLL cannot be found.

I'm wondering if this was just a false positive? How can I restore this file so my PC operates normally again?

Cheers... Rick :)

The link that tries to open the dll is part of the infection. Fortunately, the infection vector was not present.
Maybe you can use msconfig to delete that entry.

Hi there

I'm a bit confused and not sure I understand. I see the error with nearly anything I try to run. Notepad, Paint, whatever.

I'm rather doubtful that I contracted a virus between yesterday when Avast updated and today just after the update. Is there a way to just restore the DLL so things behave?

My gut says this is a false positive.

Cheers... Rick :)

Restore it to a safe folder. Add this folder to the avast exception list.
Submit the file to www.virustotal.com and check if it isn't infected.

Hi again

I'm a bit unsure about exactly what the process is to restore to a safe folder. Can you point me to some info on the process? I tried opening the Avast software by double-clicking the ball in the notification area, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it. At least from there.

Thanks for your assistance thus far. Much appreciated.

Cheers... Rick  :)

Run avast.
Go to Settings > Exclusions. Put the folder you'll extract the file there.

Go to Maitainance tab.
Open Chest.
Restore that particular file to a safe folder (do not run or double click it).

Upload it to www.virustotal.com

Hello again

Sorry for the delay. Was facilitating a class.

Okay, I performed the steps. Not sure if this means you will contact me with further steps or what.

Thanks! Rick :)

Hi Rick,

I'm not Tech, but did you 'upload' the file to virustotal?  If so, what was the report?  Was it infected?  That needs to be done in order to know whether you have a false positive or not.

Hi there

Indeed I uploaded the file and it seemed that there were I think four or five "hits" saying it was infected.

As it seems to have totally disrupted my Windows XP Pro install, I'm guessing my only avenue of recovery is to reinstall XP Pro. Facing that and thinking about the fact that my laptop is aging and the hard drive is nearly full, I decided to bite the bullet and acquire a new laptop.

Thanks for everyone's time. I'll be spending the next few days bringing the new laptop up to speed with applications.

Cheers... Rick :)
