Avast 5 causing extreme slowdown.
« on: March 30, 2010, 09:04:34 PM »
Almost all of my clients are reporting system slowdows this week after the most recent update. This apparently only occurs for those who are set to do a full system scan (set monthly on a sunday). Ever since this update, the full system scans runs non-stop. Even if you click STOP it just starts again. The only way to prevent is to stop and then uncheck the schedule. Anyone else experiencing this?

Can you check which file is being scanned at that time?

I don't think it's any ONE file. I just runs and runs and runs. WinXP Pro, Win7, Vista, it's all over the place.

It's on about half a dozen systems I know of (I'm sure of my clients haven't called about it...yet).

XP, Vista, Win7. 32 bit, 64 bit. It doesn't matter, it's happening on every system that's set to run a monthly full scan.

hmm.. would hope it's 'only' some trouble with a single file, easier to sort out.
if not, i have to work overtime this week. :(

try boot time scan you will see what happen ;)

if you are infected of script type virus it will scan repeatedly the executable file ;)

but this case happen in free only because don't have script blocker ;)

so, if it's script related, i'm kind of relieved - alternative script blockers working here. :D

and try also scan the cab file of newly download firefox 3.6 it will repeat also

and it will told you treat found but it cannot remove it.

virus programmer of today cannot penetrate the system of using .exe files

so they are using now the script type or .dll type to wide spread but it is a large file.

you will know it because your regedit will be the first target to run this kind of virus :D

Best Regards!!!!

Workaround is to go to the scans section, stop the scan, click ok, click settings, uncheck auto scan.

I don't know what to say to you guys. It's not a script virus, it's not firefox, these are random systems spread across entirely different networks.

See if you guys can reproduce. Go set up a monthly full system scan and restart. See if it does it to you. I just clicked auto scan and changed to monthly, all the other settings are defaults.

hi chrisaroz

Can you provide some hard data to the forum even from one of the computers?

Pick an ideal example would do, and as well as document the problem, show messages, provide logs, etc.. what you would do for a system administrator, so that the issue can be fully exposed.

This would help. There is not a lot to go on.
Avast7 Free, MBAM (on demand), MVPS Hosts

Intel DG41TY, Windows 7 Ultimate, IE9, Google Chrome, 4 GB ram, Secunia PSI, ccleaner, Foxit Reader, Faststone Image viewer, MWSnap.

Where would I find the log to post? The log in Avast says no virus found, but doesn't offer anymore info.
