Not again...

In short: Avast free is a complete av-suite, Avira free is only the most basic stuff (no boot-time scan, no email scanning, no web shield, no behaviour blocker, fewer automatic update checks...)
On the detection side, avira seems to be slightly better - something like 98% to 97%, not anything really important. see www.av-comparatives.org)

On the whole, concerning the two free versions, I think Avast is far superior due to the completeness.

But there is no "best" - it is a question of personal like and dislike.

Avira, A.K.A. antivir, don't seem to know the difference to that one either, as they have bought the avast.eu domain name and are redirecting traffic looking for avast to their antivir.com site :P

No..., please not this topic again :D

For free version I still suggest for avast :) - well asking on avast forum the answers would likely go to avast.
Just avast! free - is already enough. Using avast on Windows, Linux and Android.

If you like a poor update scheme, few servers available, only one update a day, ugly interface and a lot of popups, then go to Avira.
For all other happy options, you-know-what ;)

Along with what Zyndstoff said, Avast 5 Free uses fewer resources on my 3 year old laptop than Avira 10 Free. I don't use the WebShield, because I notice the drag, but still Avast 5 is much lighter.

Without WebShield you're losing quite a lot of avast protection imho.

I hear ya Tech, but I don't use any software or option, that I can feel a noticeable drag on my system.  The end of the year I will buy a new Laptop, so we shall see, new game.

Hi rnuis, I believe if you are a user that relies completely to be protected
by your AV application and don't use HIPS,Sandboxie type programs, then
the answer is easy, Avast. I say this not because I am now using Avast
but because of all the protections (shields) you get from Avast but don't
get it with Avira. Avira 9 was nice but this thing called Avira 10 is pretty
bad and it turned me off completely. If you go to the Avira forum you ll
see a lot of people that have been using Avira for years that are angry
and probably many of them make the change to Avast, like I did.
Don't  go anywhere, stay here.

If your intention is to get non-biased opinion rather than finding it entertaining to see both side of fanboyism, either here or Avira boards may not be suitable places especially after the questionable domain name issue, which is definitely off topic in this thread.

So, "politics" aside, as products, of course, both of them have their cons and pros, which is why I'm a user of both products.

Generally spaking, Avira keeps one of the highest detection rate while this is true to the rate of false positives.  So, if you are unfamiliar with dealing with possible FPs, I don't recommend the product toyou.  Avira Personal is a simple product, which just does its job as an anti-virus application.   Its main focus is its resident scanner, which can detect both virus and spyware while Avast! Home has more features to prevent malware from entering the protected computer, by Web/Internet/Mail/PnP/IM Shields, beside its resident scanner called File System Shield.  That said, Antivir is pretty quick at reacting to malware and the difference coming from the lack of these features may not be as significant as you may imagine.  Avira Personal is infamous of its nag screen which pops up whenever it finds a download while Avast! Home only has a nag screen embedded in its interface.  Some people seem to have written about the update server issue of AntiVir but, at my end, it has been significantly improved, which makes its frequent update another pro for Antivir  although this means the frequent nag screens.  For support side, AntiVir boards are rather restrictive compared with the boards here but, as I have written, its a simple product and I haven't needed too many help from their boards.

I have written mainly about Avira Personal since you will find enough information about Avast here.  So, now it's down to your needs/preference.

Though Avira boards are very restrictive - which is true - there are very, very competent people in the forum to which I am a member as well. Their help is quick and mostly on the spot.
So, compare the two forums: both are very good with avast's forum offering more personal  - let's say manoeverability.  8)

I stick to my first answer: it's personal like / dislike that is the decisive point.

Please, do not compare all avast forum users with Avira ones. Fanboyism is ridiculous everywhere.

I didn't.  You took it out of context.  I wrote it in the context of the possible help/support.  If fanboys are so eager to bite any possible lead, I don't think I can help with that.

I think it should be noted that, in Avira boards, you need to be accepted into their community user group by the moderators in order to be able to post in existing threads.  Till then, you are only allowed to post a new thread.  You need to ask the mods to get into the community user group.

That is true. And, IMHO, it is not the worst of all ideas...

Prevents every "I think I might have a good idea I am a superspecialist 15 yr old" to post in ongoing threads. Not too bad, but it's a philosphical question.
