Won't accept License Number
« on: April 01, 2010, 05:31:38 PM »
I am writing this for my sister who is totally illiterate when it comes to computer but I can do remote with her so not so bad.  She downloaded the free avast yesterday and already it says her time has expired without adding a licence.  Anyway she received the licence in the mail and remotely I cut it from the email and pasted it in the proper box where it says to paste it and I get a message that says it's not accepting the number?  Any help here?  She's paranoid without some kind of protection.   Thanks much

What version of avast is it?
The current one is 5.0.462.
Download free version 5 at www.avast.com and install, reboot, register from the UI of Avast then.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it. (Uninstall-link in my signature)
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

It was just downloaded yesterday from the Avast website.  Is there a new version in the last 16 hours?

No.
That's why I was asking. Normally you don't get email keys for Version 5, but you register via the UI. No web-page registering, no email - just in the UI.
Tab Maintenance - Subscription.

See screenshot (click to enlarge).

Well it was sent to her in an email and that's how I got my registration number for mine also.

Anyway I will have her uninstall it and download it again.  And we'll try it again.  Thanks for your help

That is the paid version. You get a license mail send for the paid version.
In the free version you should see a "Register now" button...
That opens a pop up where you enter name and email and you push "Submit" - done.

You don't receive keys by email anymore (well, only if you want to register offline).
