yes I understand the setup. But I thought yr private network might have been inside NAT security.
Although I do all my work with home and personal computers, I am Comptia qualified in Network+.

The procedure for my firewall begins with avast reading the connection (screenshot below)

I hope this thread will continue since I am having a nearly identical problem.  I receive internet through an unsecured wireless connection, then share it with ICS to other computers in my local net.  As nat1 said, this gives me two networks: the wan set to medium level security and the local to home level insecurity.  The checkbox for ics is checked (from the start, I believe).
If I disable avast firewall, ICS works fine (Avast 5 internet security).  With it enabled, internet is fine on 192.168.0.1 (the machine doing the sharing) but absent on the subnet.  The Avast interface is very murky to me, and I have difficulty understanding which network is affected when I change settings.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Oh yes I see the problem dskoe
- did you notice that nat1 has avast team work to see if there is a solution to this problem

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57922.msg490239#msg490239

the team will take note of yr post, or you could contact support like nat1 and make sure you provide link to this thread.

firewall is not murky on my simple wireless setup, but then yr connect would require special attention

Thanks, mkis.  Yes, I was following the thread, that's why I posted.

I opened Avast briefly by creating a packet rule (I'm gonna display my ignorance...) called tcp opening all to 192.168.0.182 (address given to my laptop by ics) on port 80 in and out.  I got a successful tracert to my primary name provider through from the subnet.  Avast then crashed and wiped out my whole network setup on 192.168.0.1.  After I rebuilt it and got the internet back up it crashed again.
Now my internet is working again (only on 192.168.0.1) but that server will not supply subnet computers with dhcp.
This is my third effort in as many weeks to get Avast internet security working.  At least the anti-virus is good.  But the free edition works better and much easier.

ps I had to uninstall Avast and rebuild my network again before I could post this.

Hi dskoe.

Probably best not push things at the moment. I'm sure nat1 will reply the outcome to this thread.

WinPatrol is a program I have used at times when I have to turn a firewall off for some reason or other.
Is a system monitor that keeps an eye on important areas in yr system  http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

tech support suggested a reinstall (again) and to install the newest release 5.0.492 (again...)

After doing so I am now able to successfully crash avast each time I click on the "packet rules ..." button.  :)

The only workaround for now is to NOT use Avast 5 Firewall but use the Win Firewall

Try 5.0.499 instead (the latest). The UI crash upon entering the Packet Rules dialog was a known bug in the 492 beta.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

Thanks Vlk - I just got the update running, and now my sub-net finds a internet connection YES! :) :) :) ; however, in order for it to work I need to set the Firewall setting (under Expert Settings) to ALLOW under "DEFAULT RULES". This is the only way it is working. Having the check box on or off, on "Internet Connection Sharing mode" makes no difference, and is not allowing a internet connection if the DEFAULT RULES is not set to ALLOW. (This sounds like a quick-fix and not a end-solution update on Avasts' part.)

Should or can I manually add the program that is in charge of the "Internet Connection Sharing" to the "Packet Rules?"  And if so -- what is the program that handles these calls?

One other thing that is not working is the "Show notifications about newly created 'allow' rules" and the "Show notifications about newly created 'block' rules" for sub-net calls. I assume that this is what would kick-in if "ALLOW" is set to "ASK" or "AUTO-DECIDE". I was hoping that I could find out what program is blocking the internet connection by having that set to ASK and by trying to get access to the internet from my sub-net, but that never did get a pop-up notifying me anything about my sub-net connection.

How does one get those later (beta?) versions?  I just downlaoded and installed the current ais; it's v. 5.0.462.
The software shown no version until it's installed.  This has the same name as the original download, but is a bit larger.

If you cannot use the previous Beta build 5.0.492 (now a release) to go to Beta 5.0.499 by simply invoking Update Program feature from the Maintenance tab in the avast GUI, then instead go to the following post, choose IS and load 5.0.499 over the top of the build that you now have.

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58183.0

Should be straightforward installation and with a bit of luck will recognise yr network setup.

oh here it is

hello Vlk

Try 5.0.499 instead (the latest). The UI crash upon entering the Packet Rules dialog was a known bug in the 492 beta.

I tried to installed 5.0.499 on a different system, but I am getting no-ware with it. See: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58420.0

This is hurting Avasts' reputation - for what is left of it!

Nat1 it could hurt their reputation, but not in general.
You are not alone and there is no solution as far as I know from my experience.
Alwil-Software doesn't need to wear sackcloth and ashes, they are not alone recieving compliants!

Best regards

Internet Connection Sharing should now work, with "Internet Connection Sharing mode" checkbox checked. Sorry for the troubles, there was indeed quite a few bugs.
