I tried the ubuntu 10.04 it was working very fast on the cd itself and hm..installation wasn't stable always crash!

The stable version will be out mostly this month - Then you can see if it really crash again

I find Google Chrome more responsive and fast and light on Ubuntu than on Windows

I am sort of puzzled.

not just on Ubuntu, Chrome (Chromium) is much faster on any Linux distro...but that's just for the start up. Browsing is the same.

I'm running 10.04 Lucid Lynx on my 5 yr old notebook: Pentium (M) 4 with 1,7 GHz, 512 MByte RAM and a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 with 128 MByte.
Working great, very responsive.
Not quite sure if I should try the fglrx driver for the ATI Graphics adapter... it was the one to go on previous distros, but right now it is running on radeon and I believe I had read somewhere that the fglrx (which is provided by ati) is not yet ready for 10.04.
So I'll wait a little, I guess.

as long as you don't need hardware acceleration (3D desktop) it doesn't matter...

I don't get the question...you meant above  and not below 1GB? anyway...no you said old PC so you actually meant below...the swap partition is a bit of a joke in Linux as it's hardly used unless you run one hundred apps at the same time. RAM management is extremely well done in Linux, RAM in use, RAM cached etc...meaning that none of your swap partition will be used until your RAM has been entirely used, which, depending on the amount of physical memory you got, rarely happens. So I would say the less RAM you got, the more you need a swap partition. Well I've used Linux on a PC with 1GB of RAM, set up a swap file because it's mandatory at setup time, and only saw it being used once or twice. I even deleted the swap to see the effects on system behavior and there was none. Depends also on the applications you use, resource intensive graphics editor will definitely use the swap file if you don't have much RAM.

Open source drivers on Ubuntu now support older ATI cards. This lappy is about four years old, with a X1600 card. Back in '07 it needed the fglrx driver. Later on the open source driver became available (it was a bit buggy at first, but now seems to be fine).

I doubt there'd be any advantage in using the proprietary ATI driver for such old (in computer terms) cards.

yes the last time I run Linux with an ATI card was about two years ago, the OpenSource drivers were just out, not very wide spread in the repos, buggy and hardly usable. The situation may have changed in the meantime. This explained my last post about hardware acceleration that probably works now without proprietary drivers (while that was impossible a while ago).

The ram of my old PC is 512MB and I am noticing no difference.

It was a tricky to create the swap file but I made it.

But even after few hours nothing is used

Yes, the upcoming Ubuntu  supports many old graphics card including RIVA TNT models

Last time, people who have old Nvidia cards had trouble installing them

The frequency of the updates and that on time is making Ubuntu popular and their idea to send free cds to people in Africa and other far away places seems to be paying of

But, this time, the 10.04 Beta (Long Term Release) is doing very well. Don't you think Frank?
