Foxit toolbar (Ask) with my Foxit Reader
« on: April 04, 2010, 04:51:57 PM »
For the life of me I could not load the current Foxit Reader without also getting the Foxit toolbar, which is an Ask powered toolbar

This is the two links I used. But I also went to the Foxit website.
Starts about here

Hi mkis,

Look here: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=205413

Portable version is free of it, or use this alternative:

Honestly YoKenny, do you take me for some kind of f**k idiot? I already been through this you f**k bozo.

@ mkis
I think that the point is that the I accept 'License Terms' isn't checked as I believe these terms relate to the Ask Toolbar. So by accepting the Terms you are inadvertently accepting the Ask toolbar.

If that is the case it is a very devious tactic as most would believe they were accepting the FoxIt PDF Reader.

At the time I tried every possibility David. I have stated that so many times.
That is why I was posting about it - I think issue here is Foxit Toolbar is an Ask toolbar
I wanted someone to show (April 5) they had actually gone through the process, and the outcome was no Foxit / Ask Toolbar.
I'm talking absolutely devious

I mean I am saying that with all boxes unchecked you still get Foxit Toolbar, which is Ask Toolbar
My post again *so sick of this" (following post has grammar error, now corrected - i can be a f- bozo too)

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=9671.msg488905#msg488905

I thought perhaps a changelog would show had been modification - but no, I was using same version 3.2.1.401
I mean has anyone actual tested the process like I did
or like you david (and unlike me), they had chosen to run with their existing program and simply update

I really think Foxit have pulled a stunt this time
I think I have time today to run tests again and if I do, I will reply post here
and apologies to all for my foul tongue  ???

Ok, so in a little testing, I have noticed, the ask toolbar...

Before I even pressed a button, I am greeted with a popup from 'windows 7 firewall control', asking if I want to allow 'Ask Install Checker'

This I disallowed...And when prompted to agree to the terms, those terms were for the toolbar. By unchecking that, the toolbar was not installed...

Even when i allowed that to connect, it seems to act as it should.

That said, I don't really know what happened with you...

As a side note, there is NO mention of foxit(ask) toolbar in the portable version (as that would break portablity ;))

OR

As said above, sumatraPDF (portable - standard is in Polonus' post) is an option...that yellow is a bit bright though :D

Oh I already have Suimatra.

And I am about to run tests in about 20 minutes.
Hey Scott, now I've got someone who has install this version and the Ask Toolbar has not turned up as well

I use XP, so maybe Windows 7 firewall control acts upon the install....

and the Foxit Toolbar derives from ther Ask Toolbar from what I can tell
see screenshot - Shows msn window in IE browser (Pic 1) and Google browser (Pic 2)
I am currently on computer that utilises Firefox as routine browser

Anyway, back later

Edit - sorry, what a bimbo I can be sometimes, kept sayin Ask Toolbar when actual it was Ask searchbox

...

Don't know, alll it is doing is blocking AskInstallChecker.exe from connecting to wherever it connects to...Whether I allowed or disallowed it, the toolbar was not installed.

Seems you are not the only one to experience the ask toolbar installing without permission...

I don't like the way that the opt-out is hidden to make users think that it is t&c for foxit...(even though you will have already agreed to the Foxit terms... ::))
On first look, it doesn't look like it has anything to do with ask, but if you click the terms link, you soon realise...

okay I unchecked absolute everything, including agree to terms, firefox plugin, the works

install still goes through  :o - obvious they really want go to any lengths to please their sponsor
screenshot shows what I get - and it is Ask searchbox not Ask Toolbar

will look into it further - I suppose that is only a searchbox does make a difference?

It looks like it is still a toolbar...just that it only consists of the search bar...

EDIT: From the looks of it in the installer, it is not just the search box, but more stuff to the right as well... launch...Foxit messages...Foxit online....etc...

I don't know why you still get it, even if you un check everything...something is odd with the install... ???
