@ RedFan

From the Help
Quote
Screen saver
With avast! installed, it is possible to run a scan even when your computer is not being used and your screen-saver is running. A small window is displayed inside the screen-saver which informs you about the scanning progress, i.e. about the number of scanned files etc.

If you want avast! to scan your computer when the screen-saver is running, you need to locate the screen-saver option in your computer's control panel and then select "avast! antivirus".

To add this scan to the list of pre-defined scans on the Scan Now page, go to the program "Settings" and check the box "Show special scans in avast! user interface". You will then be able to access and adjust the scan parameters as required.

Yes YoKenny as you advise.
I followed instructions in Help. With computer not being used, avast scans drives with the screensaver running.

- minor improvements in the installer, especially when upgrading from avast v4.8

Does that mean that I can now safely update from 4.8 directly to 5.0 (without manually uninstalling 4.8 )?

I believe that you already could with 5.0.462 and possibly 5.0.418 (which is the one I used to install over 4.8 with no problem). Whilst the quoted part reports "minor improvements in the installer" not everyone had a problem with the two earlier versions, but some did.

Excellent version of the Avast 5.0.499 shame that as the system is fairly quick scan sent while the full system scan after 3 hours is still 40% the previous version 5.0.492 to complete the full scan it would take an hour and a half maximum

Unfortunately without any information on the scan settings, system specification, or amount of data to be scanned, no one can comment. Not to mention the first scan is considerably slower as the persistent cache is being populated/created, this speeds future scans.

Faced the following problem with the version 5.0.499 (but not sure it hasn't been there before as well): When stopping the web shield (for some tests) and then startung again, stoping again, starting again - and then no internet connection was possible any longer, neither with Internet Explorer 8 nor Firefox 3.6... reboot required.

I admit, this is a fairly unrealistic test and probably not relevant for normal operation, but still seems to be a bug.

Hi all...first time poster!

I'm evaluating Avast Pro for our office as a replacement for Symantec SEP11, and I've encountered a few problems.

Firstly, within the first hour or so of testing I got a BSOD during a sandboxed IE8 session on my Vista PC.  I thought it might be a good idea to try out the pre-release build instead, so installed that over the top.  I see though that for some reason this is build 498, not 499..odd.  The showstopper though is that this build crashes as soon as I try to open up the avast control panel (avastui.exe).

Several uninstall/reinstalls later, I'm still getting the same result on 498 each time I open the UI.  Note though that the release version is fine if that's reinstalled.

Any ideas?

So should I update it by right-click on the "A ball", then Update and then Update Program, or should I install it with the installer?

I'm a little afraid that it won't work rihgt, after reading so many about the problems with it.

Anyway, thank you again! :)

The first beta must be installed running the beta_setup file.
The other betas could be get by the internal update.

OK, I'll wait for that last beta (5.0.499) to become the final version and then update it via 4,8's "A ball". If it won't work I'll uninstall it with aswclear5.exe. Thank you! :)

Same here Bikeman. Running Vista 32 Bit and haven't had to
delete anything when progressing up different Avast builds from
4.8 to 5.0.499. Everything looks good here, from screen-saver
with scan to female voice telling me when scans and updates
are finished. Very good, easy program for this handicapped
Senior Citizen to use. Thanks Avast Crew.

When i run a systemscan and minimize the scanwindow it didn't go into the taksbar but disapeared to the lower left of the screen as a little bar which doesn't show any information and can't be maximized anymore.
